We’re excited to announce this partnership with Android, the world's most popular mobile platform, which will help us to enable even more KitKat fans to enjoy their break,” said Patrice Bula, Nestlé’s Head of Marketing.

KitKat is one of the world’s top ten fast-moving consumer goods brands in social media in terms of fan numbers and engagement,” he continued. “We continue to build on its strong digital presence with interactive, creative branding campaigns.”

To mark the release of Android KitKat, more than 50 million specially branded KitKat bars will be available in 19 countries including Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Dubai, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The packs will lead consumers to the website android.com/kitkat where they will have the opportunity to win prizes including a limited number of Google Nexus 7 tablets, and credits to spend in Google Play, Google’s online store for apps, games, music, movies, books and more.

A small number of Android robot-shaped KitKat bars will also be offered as prizes in selected markets.

I'm surprised they went with that since it's a trademark, they actually went to the trouble of coming to an agreement with Nestle to use it, with the only reason being "very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie". their splash page pretty much confirms the name (http://www.android.com/kitkat/index.html).

I'm rather disappointed to see it's not Android 5.0, 4.x is really awesome but I was expecting something a bit larger considering all the tiny updates we've been having for 2 years. At least the different name means it should be about as big as 4.0-4.1 not 4.1-4.2-4.3, still a minor update but a bit more significant.

But... it's still version 4 :/

What happened to the delicious, previously rumored, 5.0 Key Lime Pie? Now that they took the K for KitKat we'll have to get our naming hats on to figure out what's next... Android 5.0 Lemon Curd?

Android 5.0 Lemon Meringue  . Although at this point I wouldn't be surprised if it's Android 4.5 :(.

I kinda hope KitKat comes out with a special edition Android shaped KitKat bar :P just because

They already have:

Project-Klip-Story.jpg

and no they're not kidding: http://http://www.nestle.com/media/newsandfeatures/google-nestle-announce-android-kitkat/

I know it will taste the same but I WANT ONE! Problem is I wouldn't be surprised if I never actually see an android branded bar locally let alone win one of the prizes.

Lagerling also confirmed that his team did originally consider "Key Lime Pie" as a potential name for Android after Jelly Bean, but the issue was "very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie." Fair enough. Until Google drops another Android activation number on us, feel free to make a guess on what's coming after KitKat. Hint: it begins with an "L."

What happened to Key Lime Pie?

They preferred KitKat because: "very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie." Apparently it's a favourite among one of the android teams too.

Does Google have to pay for using this name?

i think Nestle payed a ton of money to google to include their brand name.  this is the best marketing stunt i have seen in a while.

Actually, no, they paid nothing. They came to an agreement where they basically promote each other: KitKat gets a few Nexus 7s and other devices as well as a limited edition Andy the android shaped KitKat bar to make a competition which obviously involves buying KitKat bars (http://www.nestle.com/media/newsandfeatures/google-nestle-announce-android-kitkat). And Google gets to use the name.

Just when all of us thought that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie would be the next upcoming version of the Android OS, Google has announced that the successor of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean would be named KitKat (yeah, the brand) and it is Android 4.4, not 5.0 as rumored before.

Sundar Pichai, the Android and Chrome head has confirmed the naming scheme of the next version of Android. Android 4.4 KitKat is named after Neslte's popular candy bar, which is trademarked and licensed by Hershey in the US.

Google also says that "it's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody". The bold statement also suggests that Google plans to make use of its next iteration of Android in smartwatches, gaming consoles and other electronic gadgets

I know there was a topic about the Kit Kat commercial, but I've found some more info about the Kit Kat 4.4

Android is Google's incredibly popular mobile operating system, and is generally the go-to OS for anyone who doesn't want an iPhone.

Following their normal tradition, the next Android release (Android 4.4) will be named after something sweet - this time, it's Android KitKat...

KitKat is of course a Nestle branded chocolate treat, but apparently they had no issues with Google using the name. A deal was reportedly made just 24 hours after Google asked Nestle.

The new OS won't be the much rumoured Android 5.0 release, instead just being another push on the 4.x OS series. Still, most users won't be complaining, as they'll have the most up to date version of the slick OS, with all the bells and whistles we've come to expect.

This latest OS release will "make an amazing Android experience available to everyone", which implies that we'll see the OS running on even more devices than usual. The expected Nexus 5 phone and  Nexus 11 tablet will certainly make full use of KitKat, and are expected to release this fall. Other possible devices include smartwatches or possibly even gaming consoles; but no information has been released yet.

The OS will release with a special deal; special packs of KitKat bars will give you the chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet - so keep your eyes peeled for your favourite chocolate to hit the shops!

Well, this is good news because Kit Kat 4.4 will surely come with some improvements, and I'm sure that everyone likes improvements. And now the OS will be able to run on more devices (Nexus 5 and Nexus 11). And I like the whole idea of selling special packs of Kit Kat, on the day of the Kit Kat 4.4 release.

Thanks to SteepGnomeKing for the tips. :)
