4x2GB ram installed, BIOS and Windows only see 4GB

Go to solution Solved by kameshss,

it's overheating with 2 sticks already, the first 2 slots don't even work. If i put only a stick in the first or second slot all the fans spin, the HDD sounds like it's booting up but there's a black screen.

Sounds like motherboard problem.

If the sticks are working good in different system, then it's your motherboard.

If your motherboard still has warranty, RMA it.

So i just got an Asus P5E WS PRO, can be used as a workstation mobo (supports ECC),  But here's the issue, specs say it supports up to 8GB of ram, i have 4 sticks of 2GB modules which i know work, BIOS is updated and stuff. It basically only sees 4 out of the 8GB installed, i saw that it won't boot when there's a single stick in the first or second slot, but the 2 sticks that it sees are still in dual channel.

So are the slots dead or is there another issue, maybe cause it supports ECC it has 2 for normal and 2 for ECC?

Try running Memtest86? See if any modules are bad.

Does the CPU/Board support more than 4GB? My friend has 3.5GB installed with a Athlon 64 X2 CPU but the system only sees 3GB since the board doesn't support more than that

like i said before, the ASUS page says it supports 8GB, both ECC and non-.ECC.

Already ran memtest on another machine, all sticks work

could you try switching the stick around in the motherboard slots to make sure all the mobo slots work?

if the BIOS only sees 2x modules, you have either bent pins in the CPU socket,

one/more traces are damaged (incomplete circuit), damaged DIMM slot(s) or

defective RAM modules.

Grab AIDA64 or Speccy and run it. Go to the memory page and check which sticks are being detected and which are not.

Swap them over and check again.

From there it's easy to work out if it's the sticks or slots that are bad.

the sticks have been already tested in another system

Ok so the 2x4GB sticks work in the 3rd and 4th slot, it shows 8GB, yet it shows 667MHz instad of 800MHz as the sticks are 800MHz

the pins aren't bent, tried another CPU, still nothing, flashed BIOS and nothing, so the slots are probably dead

I can feel the southbridge overheating (it's hot to the point it hurts), can this be the cause?

Try with one or two sticks and check the heat

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

Sounds like motherboard problem.

If the sticks are working good in different system, then it's your motherboard.

If your motherboard still has warranty, RMA it.
