How long will Haswell (LGA 1150) last?

I have an Intel Core i3 4170 (and will probably upgrade in the future) but will something like an i7 4790 still be good for future graphics cards? I have an ASRock H97M Pro4 and don't really want to upgrade that for a while so...

i7-4790 will last quite a while, it's worth it.

Get the Xeon E3-1231V3 though which is basically the same CPU but without the integrated graphics which i assume you do not need anyways...and the xeon is cheaper.

I7 4790 should still be kicking even after 3 years with most of the high end gpus out there...Don't really think you will need to upgrade for a while after getting that cpu

Also your mobo does support it but whether you need to get a bios update for it I don't know

Here is the cpu compatibility list for your mobo http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H97M%20Pro4/?cat=CPU

Don't call me a nerd, it makes me look slightly smarter than you

Those are five years old man. But I don't think you can ever assume that kind of run for another CPU. I mean the 2500k has to be the best gaming cpu ever made for its time.

Would expect 5. Sandy and Ivy bridge are still doing well for example, Haswell even more.

The high-end SandyBridge CPU' s were very excellent for their time. High-end Haswell was much less incredible for the time.

I would expect an i7-4790 to stay pretty high end until 2018 at the earliest. Maybe Intel will have something up their sleeves after Cannonlake, but until then I can't see how a Skylake refresh (Kaby Lake) and then a node shrink (Cannonlake) would make Haswell obsolete.

5-7 if you get a 4790K and do a hard OC. Heavily overclocked first gen i7's have finally reached their grave imo, and they game out in 2008.

Haswell was good. Just not as good as SB was.

I love Haswell, but it was not as good as SB was for it's time.

Moore's law is starting to breakdown for silicon so CPU power isn't going to suddenly skyrocket anytime soon, it might even plateau before we get the next generation of computing whether it be bio-logical, graphene or even quantum [which is probably at least 40 years off everyday use].

As a side note, LGA1050 has already been super-seeded by LGA1051 which the sixth gen core i CPUs use.

If you were get a forth gen I7 today it would last at least 4/5 years before you may need to upgrade. If you opt for I3 then it comes down to about 2/3 years depending on your required tasks.

As a second side note, Most games are only now ending support for the original Core and Core 2 CPU's [Not Core I].

As a third side note (I know), CPU and GPU configs are no longer of any real concern as long as you don't have a generation gap larger then 4 or 5 everything will generally work well enough.

In what? Are you saying DX12 won't last 3 years?

If anyone asks you never saw me.
