Will a Xeon x5550 bottleneck a gtx 970? (Gaming)

I got a dell precision T3500 workstation with a Xeon x5550 @2.66ghz,  24GB DDR3 1333mhz ECC memory, and it had a nvidia  quadro fx1800 ut i swaped that with a zotac gtx 750 ti. i was wondering if/ how much it would bottleneck a gtx 970? also do you think i should upgrade my CPU to a xeon w5590? or swap out my motherboard and get a whole new cpu and motherboard?

Will it? Yes, though at 1080p it will bottleneck more then say 2560x1080 or 2560x1440. It'll be fine for now for sure.

It's Nehalem. So the closest desktop part would be an i7-860 at stock speed. And yes, those can def. bottleneck a GTX 970.

And by bottleneck I mean cause below 60 fps gameplay or poor saturation. Not in this forums sense of the word.

I never like this approach. As this implies that you keep the settings the same (ultra). You can have 1440p but aim for 60 fps and still fail with this CPU.

Yes. Considering that a OCed 6600K is literally double the performance it will be a major bottleneck.

That Xeon is about on par with a FX4300 more or less

Thanks!

Do you have any overclock options in the BIOS?

See if the BIOS has the option to play with VCORE and QPI/Vtt, also see if you have the option to play with bus speed and the multi. If so we could probably help you overclock it.

There is no one overall answer, it will all depend on the game, graphical settings, and resolution.
