Well worth the money...

The only good thing about your shows is that they are shown on Dave, and are shitty reality TV shows like Man Vs Food and Storage Hunters...

Dave is what you watch when you are bored shitless.

I don't watch TV in general and I think Doctor Who is kind of weird. I'm the kind of guy that rarely watches TV and when I do it's like How It's Made or Top Gear or MythBusters.

It's 10,000 B&W licenses from the entire UK which is a minuscule proportion. Also trying to generalize a whole country, just makes you sound foolish.

I'm not generalising anything, the article literally says Scotland has the 2 largest groups of b&w users in the entire country.

And I guarantee you any Scottish people would also be agreeing with me too, they'rd very open about their money saving ways and actually quite proud of it.

I'm 1/4 Scottish (My grandfather was from Edinburgh) and I have lots of Scottish family which I don't see enough of.

Guess, you didn't really understand that it's an article written by BBC Scotland that stated that 550 Black and White licenses are held in Scotland, and of those 200 are in Glasgow, and 55 in Edinburgh. So, to be clear, the article makes the point that the largest concentration of Scotland's Black and White TVs are in Scotland's two largest cities. No shit.

 

There's a difference between "money saving" and criminally avoiding the license fee. And being 100% Scottish, I can tell you the money saving thing is largely a stereotype.

Haha. When people pay for a TV license, they are asked whether it is Colour or Black and White. 10,000 households have ticked the Black and White box.

 

And yes, it's strange people in the UK still have TV licenses, it's an outdated model that will die eventually, we just haven't worked out how to end the practice yet.

UK is not the only country in The World to have a TV licence fee - and that licence goes to the public television and radio station

the reason for this fee is to keep the public service free of politics

 

I wish the US had an equivalent to the British Broadcasting Corporation, I'd pay the TV license fee for it. So much of the stuff PBS shows is actually BBC programming with an American narrator.

I want this O.o. In the US most shows are 20 mins of actual show/10 mins of ads or 40 mins show/20 mins of ads :'( (unless it's a premium channel like HBO or Showtime)

 

I'll pay $100/year extra for no ads

 

It always feels like such a con watching ads on cable tv in the US. The over the air networks do great just selling ads with no subscription fee, so it's pretty shitty you have to pay for cable tv and still watch an ad 30% of the time.

Nope, if you don't own a TV you don't need one.

 

Also, the license is for "Live TV" only. You don't need a license to stream non-live content from BBC iPlayer (for example).

 

It's a bit of a grey area whether you need a license for a TV that is capable of receiving live TV (i.e. has a tuner), but isn't actually used for receiving live TV.

i mean if i buy a monitor for my pc i dont to pay this license right ?

from my understanding, it's not tied to the set but to the family (household) - that 150 pounds licence is valid for 15 TV sets

It's not just limited to TV iinm. Even if you stream live from your computer, you'll still need to have the TV license. I heard that sometimes when you buy TV from those familiar retailers like Currys/John Lewis etc2, they'll automatically sign you up for the TV license so no avoid that.

Honestly I see the value in the system. the BBC is the most independent broadcaster around because of this system and actually produced quite a lot of good entertainment as well.

 

I guess the one thing I disagree with is that you have to pay for it even if you do not engage in the BBC's particular services, But to validate that you'd need a way to make sure only licensed people could watch the BCC programmes.

Sure, I was using Live TV in a broad sense, it doesn't matter how it's obtained. You need a Licence for all live TV, be that satellite, Cable, OTA freeview, or over the internet.

 

Retailers don't automatically sign you up, but they do pass on personal details obtained from selling TV receiving equipment to the licencing authorities. So if for example you buy a TV from John Lewis, your details will be passed on and held in a database and checked against whether you have a TV licence, if you don't you'll probably get a letter in the post. IIRC from when I used to work at a high street retailer, it's a legal requirement to pass on this information.
