Opinion: In all honesty I think we can all agree that this has been a good year for Microsoft. The products they released in their October Devices Event were some of the best pieces of technology we'e seen all year, Eg: HoloLens, Surface Book and Surface Pro 4; but how can we forget Windows 10! 

 

Topping it was the launch of Windows 10. First previewed a year earlier, 2015 was the year we finally got to see the new operating system in full.

 

Although this year had started pretty roughly with the Windows Phone division having over seven-thousand employees laid-off because Microsoft was taking a new direction under the leadership of new CEO Satya Nadella (Mobile-First, Cloud-First), we can expect (maybe) Windows Mobile to grow a little. Project Astoria and Project Island-wood allow developers to use 95% of their existing code and modify a portion to run on Windows 10.

 

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the year was the announcement of the Surface Book.. arguably HoloLens seems to have this title as well.

 

One of the most unexpected moves of the year was Microsoft's entry into the laptop computer business with the Surface Book. For years, Microsoft has relied on partners like HP, Dell and Toshiba to produce laptops -- and they aren't out of the picture -- but with its own machine it's attempting a bit of Apple's successful business model, directly selling the computer it thinks customers want.

 

Opinion: Windows Phone continues to struggle, but is Continuum the feature that will get users of iOS and Android to switch? Assuming that Project Astoria and Island-wood are on track to being released next year, will we see market share gain for Windows Phone?..

 

During the year, it released the Lumia 950 and 950 XL flagship phones that were supposed to help drive Windows smartphones back towards relevance. Reviews for the phones are good and it packs some cool, whiz-bang features, like the ability to use iris recognition to unlock the device, but the biggest drawback is a familiar one for Windows smartphones: the small selection of apps.

 

Conclusion: Microsoft has had a big year, they're even outselling Apple in online tablet sales!

I think it has been the worst. I like holo lens but garbage windows 10 and the new windows server pay by core is stupid. If you look into it, it is like $100,000 per CPU or core I can't remember.

I think it has been the worst. I like holo lens but garbage windows 10 and the new windows server pay by core is stupid. If you look into it, it is like $100,000 per CPU or core I can't remember.

It is. From my experience and others I have asked about it.

There are plenty of people who like it, too. I can't really defend it, though, due to the rushed release; evidently mobile is in even worse shape than desktop, though.

I think it has been the worst. I like holo lens but garbage windows 10 and the new windows server pay by core is stupid. If you look into it, it is like $100,000 per CPU or core I can't remember.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I have to agree. I liked windows 10 (if for no more reason other than I really the aesthetic) And the surfacrbook looks great.

It has a been a big year for Microsoft but still not a successful one. 

 

It's going to take awhile for Nadella to undo the horrendous job Ballmer did but I do like Microsoft's future.

Ive used windows since insider previews until today, everything was "garbage" or a poor experience like i would like to say until november update which fixed most of the issues i have seen in win.

And no there is no spying if you turn it off from settings/group policy/services and a few registry values.And no updates do not turn them back on.

 

Its true that it was a poor year for MS, because of the way they decided to do business,for windows server 2016,its gonna bite them in the ass later, who the fuck pays money per core when we talk about software it makes no sense, if you were to buy/rent servers from microsoft then yes money per core makes sense, but what the fuck has a server OS to do with the cpu/core count in a machine and why would i buy a license for individual cores, unless im wrong that sounds retarded.

Busineses will switch to linux server in no fucking time.

I'm not familiar with windows server but is it like IBM, where they charge you more if you want to use more cpu's with z/OS?

As far as W10 I wished that some things were different, like updates, or like others would add, privacy ones. Would've been nice that there are more options about those to control.

As far as web browser Edge it would've been better if it was more finished before release to make a better impact and all.
WP10 with new Lumia flagships is really appealing and I'm considering to get one.
Surface Book is a really good product, though it would be awesome to see lower price for sure, specially for higher end models if you look at it.

I also dislike windows 8 and 8.1. The only windows I like are 7 (im using) and XP (not using now).

I think it has been the worst. I like holo lens but garbage windows 10 and the new windows server pay by core is stupid. If you look into it, it is like $100,000 per CPU or core I can't remember.

 

Despite what the 'haters' are saying, Microsoft managed to get over 110 Million people running the latest OS within the space of about 2-3 months of the roll outs (announced at their October event). That alone says that early impressions are in Microsoft's favor.

Just to be clear, I DO NOT think Windows 10 is "the best Windows ever" like Microsoft's been advertising it as, at least not yet anyway. I can see it becoming very good in the future, but as it stands right now it was rushed out the door so Microsoft could try inching themselves away from Windows 8.x... the end result is a pretty mixed bag, and I will hold MS accountable for this mistake.

 

I'm a Windows insider, and I firmly believe Windows 10 needed at least a few more months, maybe even another year, in the oven before coming out. And that goes for both editions. Desktop is okay, mobile is so bad right now I don't think I want to touch it with a 10-foot pole. The fact that mobile is being sold to consumers in the state it's in right now with the Lumia 950 and 950 XL is disgusting.

MS Edge browser - a piece of crap

Surface Book - troubled launch

W10 mobile - it flew under the radar and MS removed the platform for Android crossover apps; MS will end up begging people to buy their phones

Windows 10 is an OS, I don't understand how people have such strong opinions about it. It interfaces between my hardware and my software and outputs to the display in a manner I can view it. My work PC is still windows 7 and I WISH I had Windows 10 there, powershell and command line has improved since Windows 7.
