Pentium D 930 10 Year Anniversary Build (Now with benchmarks)

iHardware Shelden

Pentium D Anniversary Build

So the Pentium D series is not the greatest CPU line, that is very true but it did mark the tail end of the Netburst suffrage, for the most part, because we all know what amazing CPU line came out afterwards!

So with this build I wanted to target the following:

  • Just how bad is the Pentium D 930 after 10 years?
  • What can this build live up to in terms of gaming performance?
  • Can this system still be used for basic modern tasks?

Now there are more minor details and goals I want to target with this build but nothing worth mentioning right now, anyways lets get into the system!

Background on original system:

So before I start I do want to mention this system was a custom built that made its way into the electronic recycling at my place of work, specs as follow:

  • Pentium D 930
  • 1GB DDR2 667Mhz (2x512MB Corsair Value RAM)
  • Intel 945 Chipset (also graphics)
  • No hard drive :(
  • InWin v500 mATX based case (same interior as my beige v500!)
  • Thermaltake tower based LGA 775 cooler
  • Intel D945GTP mATX motherboard

Also when I first got the system I changed a few things right away, changes as follows:

  • Changed CPU cooler to a Coolermaster Hyper T2 because the original Thermaltake one had a bad fan that can not be changed out.
  • Installed a NZXT 120mm case fan in the front using hot glue
  • Installed ATI FireGL v3600 (more to come about this)
  • Upgraded RAM to 2x2gb Kingston 667Mhz DDR2 modules
  • Installed 1x 80GB WD Blue ATA drive
  • Installed 430watt Thermaltake power supply

So some of these upgrades were done without the build log because mainly I did not think to make the log  and even then there are some problems with it which I will get into once other changed are made along the way.

Picture (cause come on I bet that only 2 people will read all the stuff above and the rest just came to look at the pictures  :P)

(Lots of pictures so leaving it on imgur I thought would be best)

Ooo, this is cool. I have a machine with a Pentium D 805 somewhere... It served me well paired with a BFG Geforce 6600.

Actually beige was on its way out a little before this CPU but still quite popular for some system, also why not because we all know beige looks better than black cases

Nope :) I bought the case back in April, then it was $20 for my main system

then a week later I found a InWin Q2000 based PIII system in the trash at work and that quickly became the case for my main rig, this case has been unused since :)

Haha, after I took that picture I mounted it in the front :) Which I might do again with this build...
