Maybe when they finish the Idris I may feel a little better about it. Right now I feel like a little too much of my money is tied up in "theoretical" space ship xD

Don't worry. The same people who say it's taking too long to make Star Citizen probably also whine and bitch about the poor PC versions of games we get from Ubisoft and so on.

 

Remember when GTA:5 got delayed? People complained, even though it turned out to be a good port despite some hiccups as was expected.

 

Deus:Ex? Haven't seen many people complain at all yet on the forum except one person (their name escapes me). Dunno why that is.

Exactly. Even Linus has called out the community on this one.

What really sucks is people have a bias. Ubisoft: known for their shit ports lately. They delay PC version of Syndicate and get bashed for it. When people who are bashing that game, criticized Unity. I have to hand it to them for Syndicate. It's a great game.

Wishing leads to ambition and ambition leads to motivation and motivation leads to me building an illegal rocket ship in my backyard.

I know that stat is pretty crazy, right. I get the idea behind the kickstarter, to get the project off the ground. Fair enough, but their current ship store boggles my mind.

 

I have a few friends that are already paying hundreds of dollars on "ships", like the game is released or something. I really don't understand why people would buy such expensive in game items for a game that doesn't exist yet. The project is already off the ground, they don't need any more "crowd funding".

I just want my Merchantman that I bought 2 years ago. One day maybe, one day.

 

I am super happy that I can finally fly my Retaliator though. Damn that thing is pretty cruising through space.

I get that reasoning, truly. However, in my opinion this is exactly why people shouldn't try AAA size development on crowd funding money: Smaller projects manage to have reasonable turn around times because they're well, small. It really doesn't takes much to create a 2D nostalgia bait RPG for example. But what CIG is doing is the equivalent of trying to built a massive office building by pandhandling on the streets. Just because you can doesn't means you should.

 

I think that projects like this should have a hard limit: once we reach the funding goal we'll appreciate the interest and support but wont accept additional funding to keep the project size and scope under control.

 

We'll see but this might be the first and last AAA crowd funded game.

Your point? It's not finished - of course there is no game to show. Unless you count all the numerous alphas? Which most definitely show lots of content.

 

When Elite was released, it was beautiful, but largely empty. Not really that much to do. Obviously they've been working hard to add in more and more, but Star Citizen aims to solve that issue before it's released.

 

Alpha 2.0 even brings Random Encounters (Mini missions basically) and a ton more:

Straw man detected chief: just because I mention smaller games doesn't means I approve of pointless greenlight crap. Liking indie games doesn't means all of them. Consequently, liking AAA games doesn't means I tolerate excuses and shit from Ubi, EA, Activision, Square Enix, etc. Just because I have problems with both crap indie games and crap AAA games means that we should automatically give Star Citizen a free pass: crowd funding for big projects it's a flaw in my opinion, regardless of the options available.

They won't ever release the game, just small lacking modules. They are going to do this as long as they are getting money.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

it isn't a straw man argument, you can't say "well indies/crowdfunded titles should be AAA grade" and then trn around and say "why doesn't someone make a game for PC that's good". in doing the first statement you lock yourself out of a massive group of devs that would gladly deliver that pc experience but hey, they can't make it because you have some an irrational reason (time to release) barring them from doing so. you don't get to have your cake and eat it too.

 

plus why do you care so much how long it takes a crowdfunded game to complete? oh no, a crowdfunded game took 5-7 years to make! what difference does it make? the argument you've made in previous threads on SC of "well they could have made X number of smaller games" is also completely irrational as Chris Roberts created CIG specifically to make SC, not a dozen greenlight games for early access on steam. so again, what logical reason is there to say "they shouldn't try this"?

I actually never said or implied that, hence I didn't turn around at all. At worst you could interpret me referring to smaller 2D RPG games as nostalgia ridden, though to clarify that very specific comment I actually mean that as a compliment: I love games like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2 and upcoming titles like Torment.

Other than that you're literally putting forth arguments I never made, definition of a straw man.

No it doesn't matter than it's not an actual investment since it's not just a good faith donation when you're promised the game, tier rewards, stretch goals, etc. Kickstarter is basically a legal grey area scam to defraud people out of investment money by claiming is just a good faith donation yet conducting business as if it was an actual investment, except with none of the legal responsibilities so far (yet there are already court cases on this very subject)

The projected release date is end of 2016, which isn't that far from initial projections.

 

Keep in mind, 99% of AAA games get delayed from the original internal release date - often by years. We simply never hear about it, because they only start releasing info usually within a year or so of release.

 

The biggest problem with Star Citizen is that it's going exactly as per status quo - normal AAA development timeline wise, but they're ultra transparent about every step of the way. People don't normally see this kind of transparency, so the normal every day, boring development stuff makes it look like no progress is happening.

If a game is delayed and they never told us a release date then the game isn't delayed. So far this game looks a bit too big to handle

You are the one making the assumption that saying indies shouldn't go AAA automatically means you support the current state of AAA publishers. This is not something I said, or implied at all. I'm just happy I am able to fly my connie now. After 20 million I knew it would take them about 5 years to make what they said they would. They have a good team, and keep churning out updates, so the confidence level is high.

Deus:Ex? Haven't seen many people complain at all yet on the forum except one person (their name escapes me). Dunno why that is.

I'm the one complaining about the delays, since I feel a delay is just as bad as a incomplete release. In my opinion, any company, who does not complete the product the time they said it would be done, have somewhat failed their customers (whether its delayed or simply released as is). It's the same idea as a company going back on its promise (where the promise is that they would finish at a date).

 

I also understand that delays may happen, but recently delays are now like 6 months or longer. Certainly begs the question as to whether the company put enough resources into the development of the other version of the game. 6 Months is quite similar to how long it took Arkham Knight to get somewhat fixed on PC (where it initially showed it that little to no work was put on the PC version). Just my own opinions on me trying to support the companies that at least put resources into providing customers (like me and you) a complete product. I want to put money into a game knowing that the company invested money (and other resources) into making the game.

 

If a long development period is required to make the game (like Shenmue 3 saying it may be done at December 2017, though it is fine since it is not specific), then take a long time without announcing a specific day that the game will be released. I just don't like companies making promises to release at specific date, where it then gets delayed so far back.

UE4 didn't exist as an actual product when they started development. If people are annoyed with how long development is taking now, if they were using UE4, they would be another year or two behind where they currently are.

i recall that it did exist and the reason they chose Cryengine was because of how  vehicle "usage" in the engine was mature

 

anyways it was a better choice for them to go with cry engine
