Is the memory controller, precisely rolling on over to DDR4, improved on 14th from 12th? Cause I couldn't get my Ballistix Max 4400 up to the speeds I wished when I was using my 12400F.

I might pick a 14th gen up since I already own an MSI Z690-A, but I do want to see those baller RAM speeds in here. Otherwise, I might just go D5 and buy a new motherboard (might as well be AMD) since I also happen to have my Lancer 5200's laying doing nothing right now. But then I'll need AM5 parts.

Selling one of my laptops so have been pondering on what to do with that cash. Been on the edge of an urge to move from my 5900X for a while, and these parts I have at hand waiting, are just increasing that urge...

No, the DDR4 memory controller is about the same on both 12th gen and 14th gen, with 4000MT/s in Gear 1 being about average (good chips can do 4266 or even 4400, and the bad chips get stuck at 3800 or 3733). That said, there is a difference between the -K and non-K memory controllers, so if you're using a 12400F that will have a significantly worse memory controller than even a below average 12600K or 14600K. The 12400F in Gear 1 should do between 3466 and 3733 depending on quality (3600 is about average), so you will get a better memory controller if you upgrade.
