Incase it isn't clear your satelite isp is connected via a land line.

Diagram is 10/10. Would use again. Much professional, such graphic.

well... i'm guessing you know how wifi works, so i'm gonna explain it based on that.

your satalite dish is basicly a directional wifi antenna, thats pointed at a satalite thats hovering very high above earth, in an orbit that keeps it stationary above our orb of dirt. that satalite has several of these direction antennas pointing back down, and to other satalites.

in whichever way is most efficient at that time, your internet makes its way trough wireless connections before it reaches a base station to the normal wired infrastructure that we all know.

as before mentioned, the latency is usually shyte, ping up to 700ms isnt rare i heard.

Eh it was the closest to what I wanted, the others were either not labeled or had multiple systems and were therefor useless

I've heard some really terrible things.

Perhaps some satellite internet services are better than others...

By the way is there any free Satellite services?

nothing is free in this world.

satalite is actually considerably more expensive, because the satalite bandwidth is rather limited, and the technology is rather expensive.

(with cables we can just put more cables down in an afternoon, launching an extra satalite up there costs in the millions)

Satellite internet is usually very expensive, from my limited experience with it.

It has impressive download speeds but the latency is pretty crappy.

To be fair, it's used in plenty of work camps where its primary job is to download porn and in that situation latency doesn't matter.

Dont do it. I used to have dish internet, so expensive, and its so slow. On a good day, you'd get .5Mbps DL and .3 Up

Download speeds are the worst. In my experience the upload is better usually

Why the download speed is so damn slow? I thought it will be about 100mbps or more.

The technology can actually be quite fast, but you need a pretty big antenna and a really good receiver. Not what you have as a normal consumer.

Also it is so slow because you share the bandwith with all users. But sharing is the only way to make it somewhat affordabel.  So yes, space internet for normal consumers is terrible.

No, when we started wondering why it was so slow, I ran some tests by removing the router from the system, and testing it with the modem connected to one computer. I ran many tests and achieved an upwards average of .9Mbps DL/.5Mbps UP, I believe (that was awhile ago). We've since changed ISPs, and are enjoying a much improved network.

  • 3 weeks later...

@mztang52 since you asked;
Here is a link to a post -click here-  that I made regarding the Australian Geostationary satellite called "Sky Muster". One of two such satellites that will be engaged to deliver Internet to the areas outside of the "wired" network. Like the islands off the mainland and the inland areas that do not have a physical phone line to the premises.

Personally the way I see it is that satellite Internet is expensive and capped.

Whereas ADSL2 (and ADSL) are less expensive with higher data allowances, with cable being the most premium cost for pure internet, i.e. not bundled with another service such as a television subscription.

Hope this helps
