Of course this is bullshit, I don't see how anyone could blame it on the game and not on the gun.

I dont' know why anyone would blame anything on an inanimate object.

The kid already had malicious intent, that intent was given idea from the game (which if not the game something else would have given him another violent idea), the gun was simply a tool.

To blame an object (game or gun) for the crime is like to say I'm going to blame a hammer when someone hits me with it after watching Home Improvement.

The issue here is a lack of instruction and modeling.  If you really want to get on a discussion on guns, I have plenty of information for you.  I have my concealed and carry permit, I'm a former DoD contractor and Military Police officer.  And unlike the majority of Americans, I actually know what the 2nd Amendment says and what it pertains to.  Personal accountability doesn't fall to TV or inanimate objects, personal accountability falls to the person.  And since looking at the legality of the matter, this clearly falls on whoever is supposed to be teaching this kid and mentoring him (and hopefully noticing warning signs that would have cropped up before this happened and helping him to get past those impulses to learn to be a better class of human).

Anyone else think there's the possibility that perhaps this kid was just fucked up in general? There's no details on his mental or physical health. He could have been "special" for all we know. Perhaps he knew what the gun would do, and did it intentionally.

Everyone needs to put some blame on the kid, not just the parents/guardian in regards to gun safety and violence in video games. An 8 year old while still young and naive, most definitely will know what a gun is, what it can do, and potentially how it works. Especially if the parents keep guns around. The point is, just because someone is 8, doesn't mean they will go on a killing spree if given the chance.

As everyone grows older, we become unable to differentiate knowledge and awareness in age groups much younger than us. An 8 year old is not a baby unaware of the world.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

While I agree with you, you have to also look at the law.  By law this kid is accountable only to within his ability of understanding (being a minor).  Which means while there are plenty of things to do with him, the people who are legally in charge of him must be held accountable as well.  This isn't to shun responsibly but to foster accountability.  But yes, it still falls to a person not objects.

Well, no... Some parents in Afghanistan teach their kids (probably 10 years old) to shoot RPGs...

I love the American misconception that all people from Afghanistan are terrorists.

My interpretation is that the kid was maybe fascinated by the game and after pretended to be a "real hero" and pretended to shoot someone in this case his grandmother, not knowing the weapon was loaded. In which case the blame goes to the parents or grandparents for letting the 8 year old have access to a firearm.

Playing video games is so common these days the article might as well have said "Police: 8-year-old shoots, kills elderly caregiver after brushing his teeth".

There have yet to be a single peer-reviewed scientific study which shows that video games causes people to become violent. The whole "oh the mass murderers all had gaming consoles at home" is just as ridiculous as saying "both Hitler and Stalin had mustaches", or "all the mass murderers had toothbrushes at home".

Warning, very strong language and images.

Very good episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit which is about video games. If you have ever heard anyone go "video games causes you to become violent", show them this video:

Warning, very strong language and images.

I find games are a stress reliever. It takes my mind of things and I have fun. I'm not sure how that can cause violence...

Violent people will be violent. That is just how they are. Video games do not change people in that way.

While this picture is funny, it's not like people are saying video games are the sole cause of violence. I don't think you should be allowed to play video games with 15, 16 or 18 ratings until you're at least 14. They could give children ideas that they are too young to understand the consequences of.

Saying causes of violence should be outlawed or regulated is stupid though. There is a lot of violence because of religion but people still agree we should be able to have religion at all ages. It's not what causes the violence, it's who causes it. Kids need to be raised by their parents so that they know hurting others is wrong and a video game can't change that.

@ Moderators; Didn't think this really belonged in the news section, feel free to move it though if you think it's necessary.

An 8 year old boy apparently shot his grandmother after playing GTA 4... in the article that I will link below they of course talk about this, violent games making people violent.

Do you think this statement is valid or do you, like me, think this only affects the weaker individuals out there, just like only certain people get addicted to weird stuff.

I myself believe people should stop thinking games make people violent, as that's not the case, except for those few individuals.

Discuss.

There are also some studies that show that violent video games do cause violence but I think that violent video games don't cause children to become more violent.
