If you used a GTX 470 three years ago, stopped using it, and then tried it again today, it'd surprise your face right off how much it's keeping up.

A 550Ti has roughly the performance of an r5 250, which is quite a bit slower than 7870 (r7 270).

Most gameworks games run fine on amd cards after a driver update, but people don't seem to see that, the only exception is hairworks but not really as nvidia cards can't run it well either.

Quite curious how my rig will handle Fallout 4 at this point. I know the CPU will need some overclocking, since it's a borderline piece of junk (yet somehow it hasn't failed at anything I threw at it) and I'm 98.995% positive my 270x won't let me max out dem graphics (even though I'm playing at sub-1080p)

 Not that I like the methodology of Gameworks, but I will take added graphical enhancements (that can be turned off ofc) ANY DAY REGARDLESS OF HOW BAD IT HURTS PERFORMANCE so that some day down the line we can go back to the game and turn all that shit up to get the most out of it, even with mods.

 

Otherwise we get to the point we are now with all the ES games where modders have done everything they can to make the game looks great, but they hit a wall where honestly the base code and rendering features just don't allow for true graphical comparisons with modern titles.

That started with one of the older Batman games and Crysis I think - none of can be proven, and it's not true from my perspective of opinion and investigation. Nvidia is not gimping AMD. Gimping AMD implies there is some code embedded in the game that is purposefully making Radeon cards run the game worse than they could despite not using Nvidia effects. Someone mentioned Crysis had that issue with water rendering under the world when it didn't need to be there, which is plausible, but that's the only one I've seen so far that could prove some meddling on Nvidia's end.

 

Also, there's a reason those effects are labeled "Nvidia Gameworks" or have "Nvidia" next to the effect name in the menus.

Just to be clear, the potion of PhysX they were using is part of a few game engines for collision and such, which isn't as large of a load as the effects that you see in Borderlands and such which run on the GPU. I don't think it was even nailed down to PhysX being the issue, so much as the rain effects causing massive drops for some reason on AMD's side.

 

I remember looking into the issue on multiple forums and I saw many AMD users claim to have proper fps curves with their cards, except rain would kill their fps.

The Witcher 3 was a GameWorks title gone wrong (but only barely)

GTA 5 wasn't really GameWorks oriented, and extremely hyped, which meant that they invested more time on GTA 5.

IMHO Witcher 3 is EXACTLY what GameWorks should be (once they patched in a tesselation slider). Graphical enhancements that are optional yet very demanding to actually push stuff to the limits of current and next-gen technologies.
