970/980 difference

Arwanell

so i have i5 4590, and now i want to know which GPU to choose

Note: I will be playing new games only on 1080p

970 is 340€

980 is 520€

my biggest question is how much fps difference will there be in 1080p gaming and how long will each of them last for quality gaming (minimum)

this will help me decide, 180€ is pretty big deal.

TY

Honestly for 1080p 60, the 970 is probably enough

BUT the 980 is much faster, and should last longer, and will push 144hz or 1440p etc much better, and if even more demanding games come out it will handle them better

I say plump up for the 980 but the 970 is a great choice

Alternatively, look at the 390x

970 only has 3.5 GB of VRAM :P

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

There won't be much of a difference in 1080p but when you get to an action sequence you'll notice some sudden FPS drops with the 970.  Also the 970 is shit for its price, I'd suggest R9 380x or 390x for relatively the same price if you go the 970 route.  The 980 Ti is much better, and can go incredibly fast.  I have two of them separate systems and had another a couple years back.

I think jokes are supposed to be funny though....

And a lot of people use their 970 near 4GB and don't get any performance decrease in games, which is interesting

What you want to spend is up to you

I always buy the most expensive GPU available whenever I get my PC built/upgraded, since it gives the best performance and will last the longest

but yourin vestment is up to you

A 970 will run most AAA games in 1080p at 60fps on High/Ultra settings

if you want to invest more to get even more performance, or for it to last longer then go for it, you will only benefit from it :)

Nope, you're wrong.  It has 4gb yes but 500Mb are not being used because an Level 2 cache module is disabled.  You can only access all 4Gb at a VERY slow speed.  At around one sixth or one seventh the speed you can use all 4Gb.

The 980 and 980Ti is lightyears better than the 970 even at 1080P.  I've had 2 and still own an ASUS Gold edition 980.  The 970 can play 1080p but when you reach an action sequence or stare at smoke or something of the sort the FPS drops noticeably.  The 980 and 980Ti on the other hand can play 1440P and the gameplay is fantastic at all sequences.

you can find a ton of people who are playing games using 3.8 or 3.9GB without getting any performance decrease

I dont know why, but its true, go look for yourself

Who can play a game at one seventh the speed of the card?  No one can.  He'd have to go into MSI afterburner and actually lower the speed all the way.

For a single card in 1080 I'd probably go with the 980.  The 970 is a very capable card, and I do like them, but unless you're going to overclock it, and probably mod the bios, you'll be a lot happier with the 980.

???

what you said didnt make any sense...

there are people with a 970, using over 3.5GB of vram, without getting frame drops

seriously, go do your research

vram does not change the speed of the card...

you don't get one eigth fps if your vram is one eigth the regular speed, idk where the hell you got that from

I watched some reviews and 390 beats 970 almost every time

but the 980 beats 390x

so now i have to decide between 390 and 980

That would depend on if you want to plug it in and go, or if you plan to overclock....I haven't seen a pair of 390s that can touch my 970s, but...they're water cooled with a custom bios and pushing some awesome clocks.  The 970 has a lot more overclocking headroom than the 390 does.

But, stock for stock, the 390 is the better card.

http://techgage.com/article/taking-it-to-the-limit-overclocking-nvidias-geforce-gtx-970-980/

Overclocked GTX 970 vs. Stock GTX 980

Overall, the cards are basically matched, with each one trading punches depending on the game.

My G1 GTX 970 can do 1550/1925Mhz so far, for 1080p (higher refresh) gaming its quite ample.

My older 290x and my 290 non-x, top out around 1150Mhz & 1180Mhz on the core. Giving great performance.

Recording Gameplay - I prefer Nvidia's Shadowplay and use it everyday so my main rig has the GTX970.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

No it has 4gb. Too bad it uses .5 gb in a way that your not happy with, but many games are... Lucky for nVidia users.
