Gotta make my dad a PC!

Jedicake

My dad's PC is ancient! But he's never complained about it! So many issues, goes so slow, never whines about it though, I think it's time he deserves something decent.

Literally all he does is browse the web, watch Yahoo videos (I'm trying to convince him to start using netflix and amazon prime), plays Solitaire, and very old CD rom games like Oregon Trail, and Classic Card games.

I can get pretty cheap on the build here, right? $200? If that?

Ok, this would be very good for his needs. The APU is enough CPU and GPU horsepower, 8GB of RAM means he can have lots of tabs open at once and multitask fairly well. I know this is $50 over, but it would give you a much better build than what could be achieved at $200. DO NOT go with @Comic_Sans_MS 's build. The PSU/Case combo is poor quality and liable to die fairly quickly; 250GB of storage will go very quickly; and 4GB of ram is likely enough, but possibly not for lots of web tabs. @Agazed 's build is more expensive than this one with a worse PSU and less GPU power.

My build was made to be modular and upgradeable. You can easily upgrade CPU or purchase a GPU if necessary without having to get rid of current parts in the system.

Look at the use case. This PC will not be upgraded in its life, and my build provides a better experience from the get go.

I understand that it is a horrible PSU. I did say it wasn't going to be that great

I chose the cheapest case/PSU combo from a decent brand.

250GB and 4GB of ram is MORE THAN SUFFICIENT for a Web-browsing computer!

I have an i3/4GB ram web browsing PC in the house for my mum. She uses 3GB with just iTunes and a few chrome tabs open, so some leeway is nice, and she has filled up 400GB of 1TB with work related stuff, pictures from our camera, holiday vids, etc. Although looking at the OP's post above this, I may have overestimate his needs.

A <$200 is not going to be that great unless it is a second hand PC.

But buying secondhand isn't that fun.

Not everyone uses 400gb on stuff.

Look at my HDD and SSD, the HDD has GTA V and lots of other games installed on it

Yea sorry all, I should've been a lot more clear on how extremely casual my dad is on his PC. Check the news, check yahoo stories (apparently people still go to yahoo lol) plays some solitaire. His installed programs list is super minimal, also he's still on Windows XP, his monitor is an old crt one too hah!!

Although this isn't to say that I hope I get my dad more and more interested in PC, then I can slowly upgrade over time. That'd be awesome.

Her computer needs a reinstall.

I don't have itunes, so I am streaming music and I got 2.1GB Ram usage!

@Comic_Sans_MS would it be unwise to  use a g3258 cpu as a substitute? or should I really go for 4 cores

finally, someone on the forum with little sense and understands that AMD CPUs are generally better on a tight budget. I hate those obnoxious fanboys who always say get a pentium/i3 rather than a higher frequency quad core processor, and especially when Athlon 860k is new tech as it was released only last year.

Actually good point. I want to support AMD anyway. Also I want to try AMD as well
