970 sli with a 650W

Overkilled

So it's a evga 650 GS it was actually slightly more expensive than the 650w g2 and comes with extra PCIE's

So I'm planning on putting a another 970 hall of fame (the ones that require two 8 pins) will 650w be enough

It is enough and slight overclocking may be possible too.

My previous graphics cards were 780 SLI running off a 750W Seasonic. I was able to overclock them but I'm positive I was nearing 100% load.

It would be enough but I wouldn't do heavy overclocking on it, something like a 750W I would say go far as high as you could.

It's just about enough with a mild overclock.  Fully stressed while folding my PC can use up to 450w with a similar setup to yours with 1 970.

Very. Mild OC only. 650W is borderline for SLI - 750W is what you want.

fixed that, blame my morning sleepiness :P

and well, you have around 150 watt overhead, if you consider that enough...

like what @don_svetlio said, 750 watt would be a nice upgrade. (or go 850 to get extra headroom for the future)

Stock 970 is like 170W, under 350W for two,  Does Oc'ing really need THAT much more?  350W + 150W (system) = 500W... 150W left over... 100W safely available.

He can either OC the CPU or the GPUs - neither by much.

Once you OC power draw goes through the roof - the LN2 980 Ti drew 1300W alone.

how insane would be suggesting going straight for 850 watts? if he's gonna upgrade, he might as well do it good.

850W is where I put 2x Fury Xs and 2x 980 Tis - he'll have enough room with such a PSU :)

I used to have 970 SLI and was drawing 420W off the wall at synthetic loads. But my 970s were both Asus Strix cards which should draw a lot less power than HOF cards. Nontheless you should be fine even with strong overclocks.

who cares...

HOF's aren't that hungry. Is the strix 6 and 6+2?

Strix is 3+1 - HoF are a lot better.

You meam the power phases? I honestly don't know.

It uses a single 8 pin and while it does achieve some solid overclocks of over 1500 MHz, it doesn't quite get to the level of HOF cards or gigabyte G1, once you unlock the voltage in the BIOS.

who cares...

650 is pushing it, 750 is safe without big overclocking. im running 2 780tis on a 850w, i cant overclock them at all or i get bsod after a while.

I was pulling 680-690W from the wall with a slichtly OC-ed CPU and a pair of factory OC-ed 770s.  I was running a 650W BeQuiet PSU at that time.

Needless to say, as soon as I noticed those numbers I did disable SLI until I got my hands on the 850W version.

So yeah, going for 850W isn't a bad idea.  750 should suffice, but you won't have much headroom.
