Most useless key on the keyboard and what it should be instead

German_John

Using a US English keyboard layout in windows:

The keys to the right of the spacebar.

Alt + Windows key + Context menu + Ctrl.

2nd Alt GR has functionality in other layouts, but def not in this one.

Really, I use a lot of these keys (Delete, Backslash) very freaking often.

I think the most useless key on my keyboard is the Pause/Break keyboard (Logitech G910 keyboard, it's right beside the scroll lock key). I don't use scroll lock either, but I've hit it randomly because I like making my keyboard light up randomly (and I didn't want to repeat what someone else said).

Im in the process of making a 40% keyboard so anything not on this is something i view not needed as much lol

bottom left 3 keys and space bar are clearly the wrong size if you couldnt see in this image lol

I really need to get back to work on it I just need to edit some firmware for it and finish it up.

What is the use scenario here ?

I cant imagine not having numbers on a keyboard.

PS. Shift and caps-lock have same purpose.

Why u need a windows button ?

the use scenario is why the fuck not? lol more then likely I would end up making a numpad for it since I tend to do that for keyboards I make.

and one that is also still in the works as well

@Thony I wouldn't use caps lock it would probably be an fn key as for the windows key I tend to use that more then most people would for moving things around monitors and stuff like that. The keycaps on it were just the keycaps that I took off a monoprice mechanical keyboard that I got the switched for it out of. At some point I would have custom caps printed from wasd so I would have the correct size caps what what they really are on them as well.

I found myself using them when using Word at university, when my PC was wanting to do it's own format thing.

For me the most useless button is the backslash button. I've never used it, and for me it just ruins the enter button when located like where it is in the image. I like having a tall enter button.

  • 2 weeks later...

Scroll lock, and all of these:

200px-Insertpad.svg.png

Just never find myself using them... dunno what I'd change them too though. Macros?

Insert is useful if you are re-writing a lot of text, but I admit many people A) don't know about it, and B ) it is easier to just write whatever you want, and then mark and delete the old text.

Delete - Do I have to explain the usefulness of that one? Apart from being an inverted backspace it serves a general purpose in windows for delieting files and so on (unless you are right-clicking with your mouse all over the place. ^^ ). I really hate it when Mac 10keyless keyboards don't have a delete-key. (Btw, OP's Mom should use mac and learn that the backspace actually does something. ^^)

Home and End are useful when surfing the web and editing large documents; getting instantly to the top or end of the page or document is really good as many webpages have their menu on top and all the FAQ and contact info furthest down on a page. This is just a way to speed things up.

Page Up/down are however useless today as we don't really need to scroll with the keyboard anymore as was the norm before our computer mouse took over that role. And yeah, fuck scroll lock..

Pause/break - what does that do?

What is SysRq?

So those last 4 keys could easily be removed for all I care

Yes. In some software it's the shortcut for fullscreen.

Scroll lock I've bound so my pc goes to sleep when I press it.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

I would have to say the "delete" button.

REPLACE IT WITH A PIZZA BUTTON. YOU PRESS THE BUTTON, AND IT AUTOMATICLY BUYS YOU PIZZA (and a diet coke :P )
