Microsoft HoloLens Devkit coming Q1 2016 for *only* 3,000$

GoodBytes

In today's hardware event from Microsoft, the company announces that the Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality glasses will be made available in Q1 2016 as a development kit. The HoloLens includes a full computer in the glasses, as well as everything inside to make it work, to have, unlike other VR headsets, an all-in-one solution.

Now, for clarification, the HoloLens doesn't try to be a VR headset. It is an augmented virtual glasses system.

At the event, Microsoft announces that the glasses dev kit will cost $3,000, and expected price considering the technology, and R&D cost.

These glasses will probably remain super expensive for many years, and will only hit main stream when technological advances come to make it not only more affordable, but also better, solving some of the shortcoming, like limited view angle, faster processor for tracking.

As it is, it might end up as a specialty device.

Considering this is a development kit, anyone who buys this will likely have tons of cash sitting around for this.

yes because the best way to get people to make apps for a niche device is to make dev kits expensive as all hell.

...you really don't know what the hell is used with those.

Also, Xbox 360 dev kits costed like upwards of $1000 IIRC, think it was closer to $10k though

I don't really think the goal is to get people to make apps for it.  Seems more like they are just still working on the tech at this point.

Since I doubt a consumer version is even remotely close, likely 3-5 years at the earliest.

Believe it or not devs are used to it. Dev kits used to cost a lot of money, a lot of them are free now to support indie devs but, as said above, Xbox 360 dev kits cost $10k at launch.

Don't forget that also covers the cost of the software licenses and not just the hardware.

it is still a tiny fraction of what it cost to develop apps for it. if you only take into consideration the salaries of a dev team working months on an app 3k for the dev kit is nothing

That's a lot of cash for a dev kit when compared to others like Oculus, OSVR etc.

Because it's an AR device, not VR like the oculus etc. It has in built processing unit for all the sensors and display and audio. A standalone untethered device w/o having to hook it up to a PC or something.

Have they mentioned Specs anywhere?

None so far. I'm guessing they still haven't finalise the internals yet since the dev kit will only be available in Q1 2016

$3k ain't that bad considering for a dev kit. That's for developer pricing anyway, it's meant for an investment. Imagine how much revenue will you get if you could release the first augmented reality game when the hardware comes out.

Work and perhaps scientific studies will benefit from this. And not only those but schools can now afford and perhaps open courses for it, in turn make more money from this.

It's not even the price of a license for some of the software game devs use... And you only need to buy one, not 20, 40, 60 depending on your dev team
