Stagefright 2.0 -- Android under attack once again

Android is under attack once again. A few months ago there was a bug that allowed for MMS messages to be used take over a phone, and then delete the message so you never knew it occurred. Well, it looks like this bug, which Google patched -- twice, is now back again with a vengeance. 
 
The vulnerability takes advantage of the way the way Android previews MP3/MP4 filetypes, so you have to actually open the file....or open a site where the file is embedded making this both better and worse than the previous exploit. Better since you can prevent it if you're a bit careful, but at the same time worse since it's easier to spread over a network. 
 
And like last time, it affects the vast majority of Android users. 

More than a billion Android users could be compromised by merely previewing music or videos thanks to a pervasive zero-day remote code execution flaw billed as the second iteration of the Stagefright vulnerability.

Zimperium researcher Joshua J Drake says twin vulnerabilities to be patched in an upcoming update impact all versions of Android in use.

I'm not sure if this means all modern versions, or all version of Android....If it's the latter that could be an even bigger issue since Google may only patch more recent versions:

Zimperium hacker Zuk Avraham says the 40 per cent of Android users on KitKat version 4.4 may receive patches along with the 20 per cent running the newer Lollipop version 5, since Google slung out patches in this way when it fixed the first first StageFright hole (CVE-2015-1538) in July.
"While we have no specific information about what devices will receive fixes, we believe Android devices running Android KitKat 4.4 and later will receive updates," Avraham says.
"However, since Android 6 is due to release next week as well, it's possible that only 5.0 and 6.0 devices will receive updates."

The new vulnerability works by encoding a malicious program into an audio file, delivered over mp3 or mp4. Once a user previews the file or visits a page where that file is embedded, Android's audio preview will activate the program, infecting the device. Even more troubling, the virus an also be deployed by an attacker on a public Wi-Fi network, potentially enabling a self-replicating or wormed version of Stagefright. Because some version of the preview function exists in most versions of Android, nearly every Android device is susceptible to the bug, although specific implementations vary from version to version.

Google is currently working to fix the issue in the core Android code, and says a patch will be included in the October Monthly Security Update, provided to partners on September 10th and rolling out to Nexus phones on October 5th. Android Security has had no reports of active exploitation of the bug so far.

From my understanding it's less of an issue since it requires the user to view the content, whereas before they didn't have to, but still....not good. Nonetheless, it's interesting to see how hackers always manage to find some exploit no matter how hard developers try to patch them; just imagine what could be accomplished if that time was spent elsewhere.
 
I wonder how many attempts Google will have to take to patch it this time around though.

That's why I use Cyanogenmod and update to a new nightly every week...

Used to run CM. Didn't really like it. 

 

The updating? A hassle?

 

Not really, you download it, tap install and it'll do everything for you (granted you have a supported recovery). Takes like 5 minutes, tops. It's like installing updates for your PC.

You also don't HAVE to update every week. I do it once a month, unless shit like this happens. You don't even have to be on nightlies, you can just stay on snapshots, they aren't updated very often.

 

I still think CM's one of the better versions of android out there.

 

PA was nice too, but the privacy thingy was way too restricted. Couldn't block wakelocks for play services and my battery drained.

I also tried AOKP, not as stable as I would've liked, but DAMN the options.

Ugh Google and co. The state of android fragmentation and bugs is pushing me more towards windows phone for my next device.

AFAIK it's a thing that needs to be supported by the recovery, so it should work on pretty much anything that has a modern version of TWRP.

 

but yeah, my phone is pretty easy (oneplus one)

 

It works on my tablet too, though (a TF300t) even with an older recovery!

But why is it named stagefright to begin with

Stagefright is a low level media playback engine in android. The bug's in stagefright.

I think the engine probably got its name because it enables media playback but stays in the background, like a musician who's scared of going on stage.

Recovery defo supports it but with my HTC One X you always need to flash a boot.img

 

Otherwise there's no chance of making it to the lockscreen at all.

It's not an issue. It's a requirement. And it is a big bother.
