Transfer W10 Licence over your upgraded PC?

WhiteSkyMage

I will be upgrading my SSD soon to M.2 SSD. How would I transfer my Windows 10 over that? Do I have to use the a key?

Secondly, a friend of mine is actually planning a full new build next year before July. He is currently also on Windows 10. If he upgrades, will it be possible to transfer his windows 10 to his new rig?

The way I understand it is that your Windows 10 License will be bound to the mainboard you upgraded with, assuming you upgraded from a previous version (Win8 / Win7).

Meaning you can reinstall Windows 10 multiple times on the same machine and it automatically recognises that and should activate it over the internet.

So if...he changes the MB, it's kinda over? He is gonna have to buy it?

There is a way to allow you to change mobo and still use your current key.

If it is an OEM copy, then you can reinstall it on the pc as long as it is the same motherboard.

If you're changing the motherboard, You should call Microsoft. They'll help you for sure.
