Can you make closed headphones into open

minicale

I was wondering is there any other difference other then the case of the headphones having holes / mesh instead of a solid piece.

I am considering taking apart a closed back pair of headphones and drilling some holes in the case in order to make it open but I just want to double check that it is as simple as that.

this could work, tough has a 50/50 chance of completely ruining your sound, even if the drivers are kept intact.

it could potentially mess with the accoustics of the headphones.

you can do this, but usually heapdhone speakers are designed to work best in the exact enclosure they're in.

There is a very high likelihood of failure. One mistake could result in damage to the driver of circuitry of the headphones. As an experiment with a fairly cheap pair, I would do it. If you are considering doing this to a more expensive pair, then don't.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

In reply to people thinking that I might damage the internals, I plan on taking the casing off first so that I dont drill into the drivers or any wires inside.

First thing                                                                                                    WHY ?!

Because I really dont like closed back headphones.

I am after a good headset that has a good mic as the mod mic is falls off easily and gets tangled up a lot and desktop mics pick up background audio and get in the way on my desk.

I am thinking about doing it on either:

Or

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/beyerdynamic-mmx300-closed-back-over-ear-stereo-headset-plus-mic-5-30000-hz-response-32-ohm-impedanc

I just want to make sure that it is as straight forward as it sounds before I take the plunge.

Why not just buy open?

If you do it (even though I don't think you should), do it in the name of science, because there's a chance you may ruin them or mess up the sound.

Little choice when it comes to open headsets, QH85s, Game One and ATH-ADG1 are the only ones I can find.

With a cheap closed headphone it wouldn't matter, but these more expensive ones are designed with the ear cup in mind. You would definitely ruin them along with your warranty.
