What kind of gpu for "normal day use pc" (no gaming)

I've built a new computer for my parents 2 weeks ago with a ssd and i5, so it is future proof for them as you can say.

 

Currently the system has a hd 6850 in it but I think this is massive overkill for them. My parents mostly use their computer for browsing and stuf like Word and Excel. I might use the 6850 in a new system for my brother so what is a decent replacement for the 6850 in my parents computer? They won't play games and I don't want to use the intel graphics.

 

I know an i5 is also really unnecessary but they will keep the computer for atleast 4-5 years so you never know. And they only spent about €480 as I still had a case, psu, mobo and hdd for them.

What I5 is in the computer? If it's of a newer generation then the IGPU would be enough.

Why not just use intel integrated? It will do everything they seem to need perfectly? I mean, depending what HD graphics you have on the i5, it will do things better than a cheapy 50 dollar gpu anyways.

I would go for a 7750 or even last gen for a lower price. Also if the i5 is a Haswell CPU the HD4000 (or was it HD4500) is more than enough.

Use the on-board graphics of the CPU

It can handle perfectly web browsing and office applications

If you're not gaming at all there's no need to buy a separate GPU, use the integrated graphics, that's what they're there for.

Does the i5 have it's own integrated GPU? That should be plenty fast for simple video watching and web browsing/etc. Enabling the IGPU will mean that you won't need to go out and buy a dedicated card.

 

Otherwise, probably quad watercooled Titans in SLI would be a good option.

 

If you're not interested in quad titans, probably something like a GT620 would be perfectly fine.

Everyone is right, but I'll just chime in to add validity, integrated is enough, no use buying anything special.  The computer suites their needs as is.

even then a gt620 is probably overkill. a hd5450 or something as lp and passive cooling would suffice beyond belief

My intel iGPU can run things I had no idea it could. 

I can game with my iGPU at 1680x1050 at almost 60fps in WoW, Dirt3, Borderlands 2, Diablo 3.

If you're not gaming, no reason to get a dedicated GPU.

 

if you WANT to spend money, then a 6570 is a good pick. It's new enough and supports DX11, so more towards "future proof"

Really are the integrated graphics enough? I really don't like it on my 2500k but it is better on ivy bridge right?

What is wrong with it on your 2500? But yes, it should be perfectly fine. It will play back full 1080p and work perfectly unless you are trying to game, which your parents are not. Should be great

Get something older. I put my GT 6200 in my parrents pc. since they are not gaming, they wouldnt be able to tell the difference between that $20 card and anything else. Dont spend too much money on it
