so i'm gonna start off by clarifying this isnt a joke, since off topic seems to be a breeding ground for stuff like that :/

a short explanation on why i'm making this thread:

for the last 9 years of my life i've been taking meds that -as a side effect- completely knock me out two hours later. i've recently stopped taking said pills because of other side effects, and not really needing them anymore.

the issue is, i dont know how to sleep. i've grown used to just taking the pills, browsing the net, and get knocked out two hours later. i need some tips on how to catch sleep more efficiently than staring into my ceiling for hours on end.

I just recently started listening to rain sounds off YouTube. I seem to be sleeping a lot harder, but as soon as my head hits the pillow I'm usually out till morning. I've always been like that, sometimes though I wake up thoughout the night. I always sleep with my fan on high. I like it cold and dark.

I cant really say much more than sleep when you are tired. I have not had any experiences with needing meds to fall asleep, but now in uni, I generally pass out 5 mins after hitting the bed.

a routine helps me.  when it's my bedtime I hug and kiss my wife if she's up later than me, go to the bathroom, have a bit of water, plug up my phone, and play a bit of game boy, no more than 10 or 15 min, then turn it off and take deep, slow breaths to go to sleep.  Sometimes for flavour I'll put a twitch stream at just a low enough volume that it sounds a bit mumbly as white noise.

I think being up every day just after 6 to get to work at 7 helps as well.

Going on your PC late at night probably doesn't help. I usually just listen to something be it a podcast or music with my headphones on, I really struggle for some reason if I don't have some sort of audio playing.

this is honestly a hard question to answer because its more something  you do naturally

and sometimes I pick it up and loose it

Yes, I will go sleepless some nights. Trying to close your eyes, dont move, get comfortable.

Music sometimes helped me

If you think about it, I don't quite know exactly how to fall asleep...

A cool environment puts your bod into sleep mode

Covers (sheet, blanket, maybe conforter) help bc they make you (or at least me) feel safer

Close the blinds/shades

Cuddle with a bear (optional)

Face away from your clock/any light

Memory foam is Jesus

Don't sleep on your back it's bad for you.

I've had insomnia before the best advice I can give you is to relax and try to avoid worrying about what you need to do tomorrow as over thinking will keep you awake, also if you hit the 3 day mark without sleep you might hallucinate

i'm actually a belly sleeper, but stomach issues (one of the reasons i quit the pills) kinda made me squirm around until i find a position that doesnt make me feel horrible.

Hmm just close your eyes to be honest. Maybe try drinking some sleeping tea.

Usually piling stuff on top of yourself like comforters and blankets is really comfortable.  I also prefer to do it with the pants down, otherwise my commander won't be prepared
