i prefer malwarebytes

MBAM is not an AV - a lot of people can't or don't make this distinction

AVs and anti-malware software have some overlapping, but they don't do the same stuff

I swear there was a post a few days ago that said AVG could sell your browsing history...

dont go browsing shady porn sites

dont open mail from sources you do not fully trust

do not buy stuff from sites you do not fully trust

you still wont be 100% safe, just like wearing a stab-vest in public areas does not guarantee you from not getting shanked to death... However it does go a long way

If it cannot identify you is it an invasion of privacy? It's basically random words that mean something to someone willing to pay.

 

9 out of 10 people like the A1 Thick and Hearty Burger is not an invasion of your privacy simply because you are one of the ten. So long as it's kept anonymous, and they specify it openly I'm not too bothered by this.

Not too shocking actually. I see a lot of people still complaining about Microsoft registering a lot of data with windows (even if you say you don't want to share user data and yes that's controversial), but it's actually a good thing that they do this!

 

Unlike parties that sell your data to the highest bidders like Google, Facebook and even some banks; AVG, Microsoft and pretty much every big company that wants to survive is using this 'Big Data', to create a higher level of Business Intelligence and even services. A positive example of this is VISA (the credit card company): They actually keep track of your payment history not to sell it to the highest bidder, but for your own security. If there's an odd usage of you credit card (Your credit card is used in Brazil, but you live in the US), then Visa verifies the payment by calling you.

 

Registering and utilizing these large amounts of data will provide companies with a greater insight into their products and customers and therefore in the end, they will be able to provide us with better products (in theory). Also, If your competitor uses these tools to improve their business, you should too, because otherwise you'll fall behind!

 

So again, It's not that surprising to me!

 

This isn't a plea to justify the fact that Microsoft is sneakily still registering data if you say no, but it's an explanation as to why companies are registering large amounts of data.

 

Now this is a development that is scary (we all want our privacy) and I feel that measures should be taken with the current way terms and conditions and privacy statements are presented to users so that people know what they agree to share! (Human Centipad anyone?)

 

But to pretty much demonize every company, just because they are doing data mining is not fair. If you do that then you're pretty much going to have to become Amish!

@PatrikStar24 AVG may have once been the "king daddy" of free AV software back in the early/mid 2000's, but they've been pretty shit for a long time now.

 

The program is very invasive with pop-ups and notifications, and constantly bugs you to "upgrade" to one of their paid premium levels. I personally prefer Avast over AVG, but even Avast has been getting really pushy with upgrading, etc.

 

These days, I generally recommend MalwareBytes + Windows Defender. Or replace Windows Defender with Kaspersky or one of the other well reviewed/tested paid options. I don't have much personal experience with Avira, but have heard good things.

 

I would advise against using BitDefender though, since they were the victim of a severe targeted hacking attack. Of course, no security is perfect, but do I really trust a security company that got hacked with the security of my computer? Nope.

MBAM is not an AV - a lot of people can't or don't make this distinction

AVs and anti-malware software have some overlapping, but they don't do the same stuff

To be fair, the Premium version of MalwareBytes is an AV suite, for all intents and purposes. It has an active scanner component, with heuristic detection algorithms. It's only the "Free" version that is a manual Malware scanner only.

 

Kaspersky is very good from what I've seen.

Can you provide specific examples of things that MalwareBytes Premium does not scan for, that any traditional AV suite does?

I've never experienced that, unless the PC was ridiculously underpowered/outdated to begin with (I'm talking low end Core2Duo's or Celeron's during Sandybridge and more recent era).

 

And in those situations, not many AV's are light enough for those kinds of computers, so all the big name competition will be just as slow. If you have a really old PC, you'll have to specifically seek out low-resource AV's.

 

If you have a decent, or even half-modern PC, Kaspersky will run fine.

With older computers it could slow them right down. For example my old Compaq Presario R3000 came with 512MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 HT 3.2GHz and it came with Norton. Long story short, 128MB for the iGPU, 60-80MB for Windows, and then Norton consumed just over 400MB, leading to HDD thrashing as the pagefile was in use. All of the other programs that came with it were full versions of software that was actually useful, expensive on its own and actually very good. (Eg. the full Roxio suite, Intervideo WinDVD, musicmatch jukebox, and its installation disc even has Java 2.0-I'm keeping that installer archived for nostolgia)

Norton actually has a solid product. Ever since ~2010/2011, they've had an excellent AV suite. The days of the "dreaded" Norton AV that destroyed performance and was impossible to remove are LONG past.

 

It's certainly not the best AV, but it's quite competent. I prefer Kaspersky over Norton, but Norton is better for the "computer illiterate" demographic, who just need something that works really well and is dead simple.

 

I'm not sure about that.  The Norton source code was leaked a few years ago.

Well, that's quite bad of Norton.

 

HOWEVER:

So I'm really not sure how your link disproves my statement that Norton AV is a pretty good choice for users who don't know anything about AV's, and want one that's pretty simple and won't be in your face all the time. Norton has a simple UI, with big colourful graphics that are easy to understand. And they generally score very well in the independent AV tests.

So I'm really not sure how your link disproves my statement that Norton AV is a pretty good choice for users who don't know anything about AV's, and want one that's pretty simple and won't be in your face all the time. Norton has a simple UI, with big colourful graphics that are easy to understand. And they generally score very well in the independent AV tests.

Is Norton still a system resource hog?
