Something smaller than the Evo 212?

I want to have smaller parts for my micro atx build. I am willing to pay around $50 for a cooler, and the Evo is about $30. 

 

It's quite large and I am worried I will just have to buy a new one when I want to move to a smaller case.

 

I am going to be running a core i5 4690k with a decent overclock, I won't be going for the extreme OC, but I would like to bump it up a little bit when I feel the need.

 

My ambient temperature (in my basement) is super cool at 20 degrees. It's freezing down there. 

 

Anyone can recommend a smaller CPU cooler?

Noctua and BeQuiet! Offer low,profile coolers that are 120mm or less and are like 37mm tall. Rough estimates.

Noctua do a really good low profile cooler, there is a new one coming out from CRYORIG that looks great!

I was looking at that one. Will it handle max overclocking of a 4690k?

I don't plan to hit 4.7ghz or anything but I want to be able to for ideal protection.

Honestly, I don't know. Each CPU is different and can achieve different overclocks. If I were to guess you'd be in the 3.7-4.0 range.

The CRYORIG H7 is pretty small. the cooler master GeminII S524 Ver 2 is a good top flow option, the Phanteks PH-TC12LS is very small, performs well and it's decently priced, altho if you have the room i would go with something like a Phanteks PH-TC14CS since it has more mass to it. The Noctua NH-L9i is a good cooler but it's for extremely low clearence, if you can put a bigger cooler for the same or less money, i would pick something else

Noctua NH-U9S. It's small(2 92mm fans) and it cools a lot better than 212 evo.

The NH-L9i is designed for <65w TDP CPU, like i3 . It may be able to handle 4690k if you turn off the turbo. A better choice would be NH-L9x65. It can handle a(my) 4790k without overclocking. Don't forget 4790K runs at 4.0GHz base clock, and 4.4GHz turbo. Or NH-D9L and NH-U9S. They can keep a mild overclocking CPU cool, like 4.3-4.4Ghz without problem.

How small of a case did you plan to move to?

You ideally need to pick the case before picking the cooler, you might be pleasantly surprised what you can fit in some mATX cases.
