I have a bad feeling about the R9 Fury Nano...

PlayStation 2

With AMD withholding test results until launch date and certain sites not getting review samples, I have a really bad feeling the the R9 Nano is not gonna perform well.

What's your thoughts on this?

I believe we already have benchmarks of the R9 Nano and it performs similarly to a 980, I reckon

However I might be mistaken, I'd have to check.

That's just from what I recall reading.

AMD has a history of disappointment. That's not even subjective, we all know the dissappointment of:

  • The Fury X and Fury
  • The 300 series
  • The 200 Series
  • Bulldozer, Trinity, Piledriver etc...
  • Most of the APUs

Although I stll think AMD can pull it out the bag if they want to. It needs to be radical though.

300 series are good if you ask me - 380 and Fury architecture is as old as Maxwell, 390 and 390X are good for the price - better than the 970 certainly. 7000 series was spectacular when it hit.

Vishera was good as well.

Kaveri is quite decent actually.

Gotta take this opportunity to disagree. Most of it is refreshed (or more bluntly put, a sorry excuse for a re-brand) 7000 series stuff.

Basically, the 7000 series was really good, great competition for Nvidia. However, AMD then kept that architecture for too long and then when they did refresh it, it was with the re-branded 200 series and now, the even more so rebranded 300 series. How many new chips have they came out with this generation? 1? Last generation? 1?

It's pretty atrocious business and AMD needs to radicalise. It's quite clear that mediocrity is acceptable at AMD.

For this generation, the only cards of the 7xxx series is the R7 370, which is a refresh of the 265, which is a refresh of the 7850.

The R9 380 is a 285 refresh

and the 390/390X are 290X refreshes

not sure what the R7 360 is though

Why fix something that ain't broke? The 7970 beat the 680, it beat the 770 and is currently, after so many years of driver optimizations, a stone's throw away from a 780.

GCN was designed from the ground up to be a DX12/Vulkan/Mantle architecture hence why it won AMD the console contract - i mean - 900 series were cooler but Sony and Microsoft went with AMD in a machine that would be cooling-impaired - they aren't dumb - they just know AMD offer a better long-term solution. Look at people who bought a 7870 in 2012 - still going strong and on the level of the 760.

What's your thoughts on this?

It's Fury perfomance at Fury X price, it's all about the form factor. If you wanna build a mini-ITX rig and you need a tiny card, the Nano is by far the most powerful card in the ITX category, so, that's pretty much it dude, you pay a premium for a tiny yet very powerful GPU.

It would be like if Nvidia was still using Late Fermi or Early Kepler today

Yes the recent cards have been refreshes but doesn't that show how powerful they were in the first place? Personally I am embarrassed for Team Green that such "old" kit is capable of pretty much the same performance as their newest kit!

I want to see some testing done on W10 as this is the current OS and it has shown a lot of improvements for AMD.

Also isn't there the slightest worry about Nvidias shady attitude could bite you in the backside?

Well - they probably would if they could. Kepler was at it's limit with the 780 Ti whereas the 290X isn't even fully utilized. What the recent DX12 fiasco was about is what happens when you use the full power of GCN.

here's the other thing: GCN sucks ass at DX11 and gives their Nvidia equivalent a run for its money
