r9 390 vs gtx 970

Right I know this is one of the biggest questions in graphics cars at the moment but still im asking it, the reason is that drivers have matured now, prices have settled is and all that stuff, i know i could just look up benchmarks and draw a conclusion from there but that's not it,firstly drivers for the 390 may be better allowing the card to run more efficiently and stuff now but yeah

 

please note ill be gaming on 1920x1080, 2560x1080 and sometimes 4k (I'm a student and live in and out of my term time house and non term house)

Also perf overall and your more on the safe side with tthe recent DX12 issue leakes onthe NVIDIA side

wow the tides have really changed, i should note the 4k gaming is rare and i wouldnt care if it couldnt handle it but good golly i remember a few weeks after launch people where very on the fence if not towards 970

sure 970 isn't bad but the 390 still performs better and that extra vram comes in handy for gta, as for power well I got a 600 watt psu which would be fine and it's not like I game 24/7 so power bills wouldn't be that much higher

390 is the better performer here, but if you want to be a part of the Nvidia ecosystem go for the 970.  They're very close in benchmarks.

I have a 970 and wouldn't trade it in for a 390 if I could. It overclocks like crazy and performs better than an overclocked 390 is gonna get me so why change what doesn't need to be fixed?

I use DSR for 1440p and 4K gaming and it works great too. No vram issues.

That is not true...7/10 Benchmarks use a badly overclocked 970 vs a highly overclocked 390. Yes check out Jayz Sapphire Nitro video. It shows the 970 performing the nearly the same even above 1080p. Imagine if that 970 was actually OCed well.

390 for future-proofness, 970 to get the best performance now. Tough choice. Good luck.

 

Edit: I'll explain why. Nvidia has much lower driver overhead, which is good. This means that you get more fps in CPU intensive games than if you had an AMD GPU. Framerates you see in benchmarks? Forget it. At least most of them. You only have an i5. You'd get a bit better performance in GPU intensive situations with the 390, though. But pretty much all latest AAA titles are sometimes CPU-bound, and in those situations you'd get a lot worse performance with an AMD GPU due to their inefficient driver.

 

My opinion is based on the assumption that you'll be playing on lower resolutions most of the time, and only rarely at 4K. At 4K AMD is better as it's the GPU's raw power that is needed in that case and so AMD's inefficient drivers don't get in the way.

Oh boy lol. The Nitro video was an actual fair comparison because they were both bad overclocks for both cards.

i would also, but the fact my 650 watt  psu wont handle two of them while it will handle two 970s is holding me back.

I'm only rocking a single card and plan too for a while, I'd like to stick to single cards but chose a motherboard that can handle x fire or sli in case

Listen! Slowly read through my posts. I said this twice his first 390 video with the MSI Gaming 390 vs the EVGA SSC 970 was a bad comparison as the 390 was a great overclock while the 970 was a terrible overclock.

One of his more recent showed the Sapphire Nitro against the SSC. The Nitro 390 didn't have a very good overclock so it brought it to about the same bad overclock as his 970 relatively speaking. That's why the comparison is better than the original one.

I'm not repeating that again so if you don't get that then don't reply lol!

Personally I would do 970 but I use the H.265 encoder a lot. Currently the 970 over at EVGA B Stock listing is running at $260.
