Linux circle-jerk thread.

I used to use ubuntu, before I wanted to play my games again :)

Wine just never liked me, so I just went and got a copy of Windows for $25 from G2a.

I miss my linux.

VM ware yo.

Changing it takes time and effort, as well as a big understanding of the distros etc

Not really, I jumped from Mint to Arch, /r/linux4noobs and the Arch Wiki tell me everything I need to know. You can customize just by installing a few things.

More supported programs and games without having to use buggy wine, cleaner look IMO, and a more streamlined experience.

And if someone doesn't happen to use any problems that require wine? Kodi runs natively, Steam runs natively. What if someone is going to just run Kodi over the top of whatever OS they are going to be using so they don't even see the native interface? And btw have you used Windows 8 or 8.1? Because they sure as hell aren't cleaner or more streamlined than most Linux desktop environments. Also the hardware requirements are ridiculously high for Windows. In Linux for my use case my single 4GB RAM stick is massive overkill. In Windows I use ~3.6GB just idling.

So I ask you again -- what added value does Windows come with to justify the $100 price tag for my media PC?

This is what I don't understand. If you're going to pirate something why pay $25 for it? If you're OK with buying a key that is most probably stolen just get it for free.

Ok, got me there. But what functionality does Linux have that windows does not?

Messing around with a couple of distros. OpenSuse w/ KDE, Debian and Ubunto w/ Gnome. TBH they all seem pretty similar to me. Bit of a UI change but other than that, I can't see much reason to choose one over the other bar the look of the environment.

Debian looks pretty boring. OpenSuse (KDE) looks nice. Ubuntu (Gnome) looks childish but it's not bad. I do like some of the extensions for Gnome. Drop down terminal is nice.

Steam may run, but all of my games but 1 do not. Also I have 4GB RAM, and idle at less than 1GB... $100 means no problems setting up, much easier to use for those not in the know how, etc. You cannot underestimate user-friendliness.

So either you are being lazy or you do not know. I will not debate about something if the other person does not even bother to give reasons why their precious operating system is better.

But I'm not running any games natively and even if I had Windows installed playing games on a Pentium and its integrated graphics, which is the hardware of this machine, would be fucking dreadful. Even if this were a Windows machine I would still have to stream from my gaming PC just as I do currently. I had no problems setting it up either. I ask you for the third time what value would buying Windows offer me?

Nothing for you, because you took time to bother with learning Linux, and don't do what most people do with their PCs. You are UNUSUAL.

No I didn't, I'm a complete fucking noob. I'm learning stuff as I go. For the tasks I actually use it for, however, it is simple. Actually much simpler than it would be to do the same tasks on Windows, as it happens.

However your question wasn't about why everyone should use Linux, or why we exclusively use Linux (because I don't. My gaming PC is still Windows for now), but you demanded of us why we don't just stick to Windows. To which I asked what would we get out of not using Linux for our use cases? It's taken this long for you to recognise that the answer is nothing. For what we use it for, there is no point in paying anything for an OS.

I also want to point out that this thread wasn't about Windows. This was a "let's talk about Linux!" thread and you saw fit to come here and shit on the OS and give all the reasons you use Windows, which clearly weren't even applicable to our use cases. Which is extremely rude and fanboyish and pathetic of you. You're no different to people seeing a "R9 390X owners club" thread and posting two pages about how much better the GTX 980 is and how Green Team Rulez.

Why use platform where you can get 190,000 pieces of malware a day?

Do you know how many known functional viruses & pieces of malware there are for Linux? 11, that have not been fixed of patched.

I've dabbled in Linux for a bit before, mostly Ubuntu and Mint. But I always end up switching back to windows because of Games.

Dual booting is just a PITA, having to switch whenever I want to play something on a whim, ugh. I might as well just stay on Windows.

Also, I absolutely hated having to use the terminal most of the time, when I wanted to install an application that wasn't in the synaptic package manager, because the application creator didn't bother compiling it.

You demanded to know why people didn't pay for an OS and then argued with everything they said even though for us both OSes offer exactly the same functionality (and in my case even aesthetic). You clearly did come here to shit on the OS.

You asked:

Why do you bother with Linux? What does is it do that Windows doesn't?

Apparently, this was intended as a rhetorical question, as you didn't accept any answer that people gave you, which implies that you did in fact come to this thread to shit on the OS.

Also, if you want to imply that @othertomperson was condescending, he was not, the only one who's being condescending is you, sir.

On topic: I'm using Mint Cinnamon right now.

Lets make a poll somewhere:

Is it easier to set up and maintain

1.Ubuntu

2.Windows

The problems with viruses and updating all programs... not worth the 100$ for me. Sudo apt-get update

You act like viruses are a daily thing. Windows Defender and Malwarebytes and you won't need anything else

From Linux mint to Arch + Cinnamon and I'll stick with it forever. I tried ubuntu/debian, fedora...etc and nothing as stable as Archlinux!
