2x8GB so you can upgrade further later down the road if need be.

You do gain more bandwidth, but you are limited on upgrading and the additional bandwidth will not be noticed by most people.

Well if he is a poweruser he will notice it. (eg. compiling a lot of stuff)

2x8gb for Z170 using both channels is not only a waste of space but actually makes the memory controller work harder, 4 dimms is only better for x99

Who on earth feels like their RAM bandwidth is an issue?

Unless he's using DDR1 the difference will not be noticeable in real-world usage.

No. Get 2*8 because you can expand in the future.

if you're building a new system: fill up half the slots you have.

if you're upgrading: add the same as you already have.

What motherboard?

2x8 if you will want 32gb later, or 4x4 if 16gb is more than you'll ever need (which it is for just gaming)

I do notice it on DDR3. I ditched my 1x2 and put 2x1 in my laptop. (a long time ago, 2010-ish)

I would prefer 4x4, because 16GB is all i'll need for the foreseeable future.

I say that while my z170 rig is being held up by a 2x8 kit not being in stock ATM....

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

You won't need more than 16GB (I'm assuming that you're only gaming), so it doesn't really matter. If you think you'll upgrade in the future, go with 2x8GB sticks. If you know you won't need more than 16GB, it doesn't really matter.

That's single-channel to dual-channel, which is a completely different story.
