Hey guys, I know this has been discussed a number of times in here but I guess it's save to say that my situation is... kinda diffrent.  Why?

Well mostly because I haven't upgraded my computer in 8 years! I still use a Q6600 and a 5750HD (actually this part was pretty much the only one I upgraded because my 8800GT burnt out 2-3 years after buying the PC). I was a real enthusiast when I bought this rig, it was something really powerful in that time but I guess over time I started to deviate a bit from gaming in general which is the main reason why I didn't upgrade my PC over time. Anyway, recent games have been peeking my interest quite a bit and so I decided to heavily upgrade or better yet buy a new setup completely.

At first I was decided to wait for pascal since it's only about a year or so away but sadly my current PC is almost kicking the bucket which is why I decided now to get this new setup. Still I'd like to know your opinion (now that the 980ti is out) if it's worth to wait for pascal or not. Pascal seems to be more focused on 4k gaming which is not something I'm interested since I mostly play on 1080p screens and I plan to do so for quiet some time. If it IS worth the wait though, I don't mind upgrading the psu and HDD (which are the parts that are dying in my current PC) in order for my rig to last one or two more years.

On the other hand if it doesn't seem worth waiting considering I haven't done an upgrade in such a long time, maybe pascal won't be as incredible as nvidia is making it look like or maybe pascal is just not for me since I'm not planning to go 4K, than I would be happy to do the upgrade as soon as possible since I'm sure I'll be happy with the 980ti, specially looking at the upgrade that it'll be from my old 5750HD. Not to mention a new upgrade is always exciting  :D

Anyway I apreciate any opinion given on this subject  :)

would it be like compareing devil's canyon (haswell) to skylake?

GPU's tend to offer a bit more than that. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20%-40% of an improvement overall in terms of generation to generation comparison

gonna be time till Pascal, just get a 980Ti now.

No, Nvidia does have (usually) larger performance jumps than that but the 980 Ti is already very powerful.

Nvidia's new process. Think of it as a codename like kepler, fermi, and maxwell.

Uhh OP, @DannyDem if you arent planning to move to 4K there may not be a point in pascal. The 980Ti is totally overkill in 1080 so you should be fine there.

wwell you can through all the graphics you want at you PC an it could not do a thing what are the Specs of your current system.

This new setup I'm building does include either a 6700k or a 4790k and 16gb of ram. PSU, HDD and such, I still haven't decided.

Current rig:

GPU: 5750HD

CPU: Q6600 2.4Ghz

Ram: 6GB DDR2

HDD: 500gb

Motherboard: P5K Pro

Nvidia's new process. Think of it as a codename like kepler, fermi, and maxwell.

Yeah that's kinda where I'm at. With all the focus on HBM memory and what not seems like Pascal is all about 4K(which I'm not interested) and since the 980ti is already overkill as you said in 1080p, maybe pascal won't be much of an improvement compared to the 980ti to me.

ok well unless your going to be running like a tipple monitor setup at 1080p the 980ti is overkill a bit. but its still avery good option.

If i were you I would go with a 980 or 970 is if you must have nvidia. Other then that i would still go with a 980 ( you can pick them up on ebay for around $400) or just get a R9 Fury. and either of thoughts cards in Sli/crossfire will crush a 980ti if the game supports that sort of thing.

Isn't that a pretty strange name for a GPU architecture ? the others are kinda ... well less common ...

Maxwell Fermi Kepler sounds good for GPU architecture?

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

Pascal will be like any other jump in performance from other generations, HBM will not help it and the node shrink will not help it in performance, high end Pascal might not be out till 2017

This backup my statement that NVIDIA will not release high end Pascal in 2016 as TSMC is thinking about giving HBM priority to AMD, so NVIDIA will have to wait for Samsung HBM, which starts mass production 1H of 2016, then it will take a while for NVIDIA to develop the GPU, this all comes to a high end Pascal release in Q2 2017

Yeah looking at how it might still take 2 years till high end pascal is here, getting a 980ti right now seems like a better choice in my situation

Yeah seems like a true overkill but seeing games getting more and more demanding, I prefer to waste a few extra bucks and be ready. Not to mention I'm from europe and for some reason the price diffrence between the 980 and the 980ti is not that much and getting the 980ti from outside europe cost too much taxes that it's not even worth the lower prices :\

Okay, Nvidia has been naming their architectures after famous dudes (ie: Maxwell, Volta, Kepler, etc.).

Oh ... pascal like in the european scientist and philosopher ! Ok I see now, I thought they just randomly named it after a first-name ^^

that would've been strange ...
