Why does there exist a locked and unlocked version of CPU's

Yup, Overclocking is good for people like us (techies). 

 

For the average consumer they do not need to overclock so they have a CPU for a bit less $$$. However I doubt it that they made a K and a non-K version to "please consumers". It is probably some marketing thing.

not everyone likes to overclock and a lot of people think that a normal conservative overclock will damage the cpu but actually it isn't so risky xD

If you don't oc and you're never going to do that then pick the non k or x processor because usually they cost less than the k or x processors...

They are in tons of prebuilts. No one knowledgable buys a prebuilt and knows how to overclock on it. No one would buy a prebuilt with a locked CPU also if they knew what they were doing. They'd see it had an i7 in it and buy it.

That post concerns an older CPU where overclocking the BCLK was feasible. Newer Intel chips have their BCLK controlling the PCIe signal as well, which prevents significant overclocking there. So to overclock more than a few percent, you need to use the multiplier - which means you essentially cannot overclock CPUs that are multiplier locked. That then allows Intel to charge extra for chips with an unlocked multiplier.

 

(for Sandy and Ivy Bridge, they also offered chips with a partially unlocked multiplier)

Because all their CPU's would rise in price... cos Intel.

/Plus there is no need, their locked CPU's are AMPLE for consumers.

 

Only the content creators and "so called" enthusiasts would have a 'need' for a K-skew.

Both lock and unlock cpus can be overclocked. Lock cpus have a limit on how much it can overclock, it's usually stops at its turbo boost clock. Unlock cpus can go beyond its turbo boost, but it has a limit too. This limit is based on silicon lottery, where some can get this much oc and others can go much higher.

Some buy unlock cpus and don't OC, either they're not familiar with it, afraid they might damage their cpu, or other personal reasons.
