You can always take out loans to pay for college.  It's actually not too daunting and will be a great investment.  The salaries for a CS degree out of a four-year program are great and most tech companies will pay back your loans for you.

Please don't join the military for "opportunities"

Check out Cisco certs like many have suggested - there's study books you can get anywhere from cheap to expensive.

yes everything else is ok. I just need to get something moving along. I eventually want to be running a store where I build rigs and sell parts and what not.

New York is a big place mate, just walk around enquiring, if there isn't anything then keep doing it.

If you can't get a job anywhere in a city of over 8.2 million people then I don't know what to say, I live pretty much in the middle of nowhere with small villages dotted around the place and I'm struggling to get anywhere right now and what really pisses me off is that I have a very good qualification (also there is a little New York a few miles from me lol).

First off, it's not the "elites'" fault that college tuition is through the roof.  It's the federal government's fault for making student loans so easily accessible.  Not everyone is college material.  Believe me, I saw it firsthand.  The government guarantees these loans and as long as you qualify(your parents don’t make too much) you won’t be turned down.  So what do the colleges do?  They slowly start making college more expensive.  Do you really get more for your money?  No.  You still have to buy the same books, attend the same lectures, and do the same studying (if you want to succeed).  The kids’ parents started to get wise and thought, “Why would we pay this high tuition here when I can go to this other cheaper college?”  So you know what colleges started doing to justify their exorbitant tuitions?  They started building multimillion dollar gym facilities and multimillion dollar dorm facilities and a whole lot of other stuff to enhance the “college experience”.  All paid for by inflated tuition paid for by federally guaranteed student loans paid for by naïve kids and parents that think paying such a high price for a college education is a good investment.  Well, it isn’t.

I’m guessing you didn’t try too hard in high school if you aren’t eligible for any type of scholarships.  Don’t most states have a Hope Scholarship type program where you maintain a certain GPA and they help pay for in state college tuition?

I know this might seem harsh, but don't go around blaming other people for you shortcomings.  Trying to make excuses will just prolong the suffering.

Good luck!

Honor First!

Can you do Microsoft training online? what about other major companies like oracle, start your own web development maybe?

Microsoft has a ton of resources online you can learn from.  This is the site I use to sign up for cert tests:  http://www.register.prometric.com, they have several testing centers around NY/NJ.  You can find study materials for cert tests online to varying degrees.

Get on the Microsoft learning email lists, I got a mail for a free Azure Cloud seminar out in NJ.  It filled up quick and I was lucky to get in, but it was actually a really cool, useful experience.

Oracle has some free webinars as well, but theirs are more focused on selling their products, Oracle always seems to be on the hustle.

One thing I've found has been really useful in my own learning is to buy hardware and set stuff up for yourself.  Download a Trial server install from Microsoft and set up a domain controller for your network.  Download ESX server from VMware and play with VMs.  Download applications from Microsoft and Oracle (you can get free trials) and practice setting them up.  learn how to understand their documentation.  Download Unity3d and learn how to make games.

Hope this helps, there's a lot out there to learn for self-motivated learners.

I know those feels, I live in a seriously tourist driven economy here in the Blue Mountains. If you're not a barista or a waiter, have fun getting a job.

I am quite blessed. It's a beautiful place, one of the last places to live that's not too far from everything, yet not too urbanised and crawling with unsavoury characters ("lads" here, you'd know them better as "chavs" if you're from the UK?).

Chavs lol, I know then well *readies shotgun*

We drove like 30km or so from the Blue Mountains, really wish we had stopped but it'll have to be another time now, I need a job and hopefully get to Melbourne.

'MERICA' I mean 'BRITAIN', shit doesn't sound as good, ohh well lol

Yeeaahh, you share the same distaste with them as I do. You'd fit in well here!

A drive through the Mountains is scenic enough to get the jist of what I call home. Although, stopping off would have been teasing yourself. Having lunch at Katoomba then seeing the Three Sisters doesn't entirely capture living up here!

What's in Melbourne for you? I've heard it's quite cultural, more so than the mountains. Good music/food/clubs etc.
