I have been challenged by my dad to do some non malicious hacking of are home router as a way of learning some new languages other than java, and as a part of this If I can do it with out using a simple key logger or password cracking software he will buy me the new Razer Blade laptop. I have very little knowlege of how to do hacking of anything and what I would need to do or use.

that's too easy. you should try to hack the pentagon for a practice.

Enable wps and do a wps password crack with Kali linux done.

inb4 asus router is decent and has ballin rate limiting
