So a friend of mine sold me an engagement ring that he has from his ex. My goal is to basically take the stones and put it into a custom setting. The center stone e is 1ct si2 g (near colorless). Accent stones are all .28ct si1 h (neat colorless) and the setting is 14k white gold as is the band. It was appraised at 12 sold it to me for 2k. We took it to get it verified prior to my assurance. He had the receipts totalling 10k as well. But my question is, the center stone is worth probably 5-7k if I had to guess. The appraisal was 7700.

Yeah, I would say the diamond r9 290x would pair well with your i5, you shouldn't need to overclock. And by 7700 did you mean 7970? Yeah that card is a bit like a 290x, but I wouldn't go with it.

What is the center stone roughly worth

Getting it completely custom made with those diamonds.

Well, my google searching and pretty much zero knowledge of diamonds says that a 1 ct SI2 G diamond seems to be roughly in the $5-7K range probably..

You say you also think it's worth $5-7K.

You say you had it appraised for $7700.

I'd say, the appraiser might have made a bit of a high estimate, but we're otherwise on the same page that it's probably worth around $7K. Maybe a bit higher on a good day, maybe a bit lower on a bad one.

If you're not selling the diamond, does the sale price matter that much?

Also: Can you propose to me? I'd like to live a lifestyle where $10K diamond engagement rings are commonplace.. My brother recently got married, skipped the engagement ring, and just got his wife a $50 generic wedding band, and I'm thinkin he's pretty genius for saving all those moneys. :)

This is off-topic so yeah.

I wasn't saying that it shouldn't be asked for CoC reasons or anything like that, I'm just pointing out that we're not experts in diamonds. If he wants an official (and more importantly: accurate) appraisal, he should take it to a professional appraiser (or at least someone who knows what they're doing). What are we going to do, google "1ct se2 g" and see that $5-7K is probably in the correct pricerange?

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

I don't like diamonds for the sole reason that they have brainwashed us thinking that the only engagement ring should be a diamond ring. And that we should put a full two month's income into it.

Diamonds are only as valuable as they are because of how much they limited the supply when they found the mines in Africa :/

This. Diamonds are very, very abundant, and could even be considered an ordinary and common stone, with very little value. But there is a monopoly on the mining of them, and only a small amount is released for sale every year, making it seem as if it is a rare and precious stone. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of them are being stashed away at some big warehouses.

Diamonds are stupid and artificially overpriced. Don't buy diamonds, kids.
