Compaq was eventually bought by HP and served as the budget line. Before that they actually made decent laptops.

Remembers Gateway? Dude, they're still around.

 

Basically, Gateway is the North American "Discount" line for Acer, and Packard Bell is the European/Asian equivalent.

 

FYI, Gateway still earns about $4 Billion USD per year in Revenue (Correction: That $4 Bn USD is from 2006 - their 2014/2015 revenue is likely vastly decreased from that) (Please note: Revenue != Profit. Revenue is simply all income before expenses).

They only collapsed in oz then. They used to be big and make good PCs from this market...they still like a shadow of their former self

They were a notoriously bad computer company, they got in a lot of legal trouble over using used parts in there computers and failing to notify the consumer about it. They ended up getting in a huge lawsuit and now they no longer operate in America. I think they were named the worst computer company of the 1990's.

Didn't Packard Bell become Compaq and were eventually bought out by HP?

I think compaq is completely seperate from PB. I could be wrong.

Compaq and PB have literally no relation to each other. They are - and have always been - separate companies, or owned by separate parent companies.

i have a 15 old laptop that still works, i'd none of them are fast, but you can count on it to last for about 30 years-

My first computer was a packard bell.. Terrible build quality, it broke 3 times within a few months, had to ship it out each time it broke too, at our cost.

They were the first ones to use custom fonts for pictograms in printed papers. They were one of the developers of unix iirc.
