So this is a new daily series I'm starting call Logic. What it is, is I will present a topic that requires logic to think about, then we will discus it and debate. I will make a new post everyday.

Day 1: What is evil? Define it.

A general definition is, "The absence of good"

But... what is the definition of good?

A general definition is, "The absence of good"

This doesn't answer the question, it only furthers the question. Becuase to use "absence of good" as an answer, we would have to answer the question "What is good?"

Inevitably, this will lead us into a circular argument.

For my answer, I would start off by saying, that ´evil´ is a way too subjective term to be answered via logic.

All we can do is to answer the question from our subjective perspective, and hope we have argued our position well enough.

For example, some religious sects find it immoral (or evil if you will) to cut your hair. I don't subscirbe to moral stance, and thereby it makes the question, of whether or not cutting your hair is evil, into a subjective question.

Personally, I don't like to use the word evil due to it's objective connotation, and thereby I can't define it.

I can define what I find immoral, amoral and moral, but not on any objective standard.

While I like the idea of making these threads, I would suggest that you rename them in future revisions.

This is a philosophical pondering, not a logic based puzzle.

Logic is basically doing math with words rather than symbols.

Aren't words just strings of symbols that we call letters?  ;)

I think Evil is just a personal definition of something repulsive and unpleasant.

...and my pseudo-intellectual as now been penetrated.

You are very correct, and I did actulally screw up pretty badly in my statment.

The modern school of logic, as presented by people like Betrand Russell, is primarily based on the use of symbols.

But I think the core of my statment still stands. Making a logical syllogism is basically like doing calculus using only words.

In a more abstract sense, logic is there to show the relation between ideas and concepts.

this is the kind of statement that is crafted only to bend reality to your needs for the sole purpose of proving a false point right.

you know that you're going philosophical and not logical when you see stuff like this. the japanese manga kind of philosophical

OT: this, to me, is evil. the selfish refusal to acknowledge a reality for the sake of your own advantage

Ah, c'mon, I was just teasing. And I agree with most, if not all, of your post.

Did you really think I was serious when I said that?  :P

(But seriously, I'm sorry that I caused you to interpret it that way.)

I know were just teasing. The smiley (that's a word from past) made me figure as much.

I just ceased the oppertunity ot explain myself a bit further, since I actually made a mistake in first post.

Sometimes I think we need a symbol to clarify when we are making jokes.

Oh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up. Anyway, I don't think that post you made was very flawed at all. I'm sure everyone knew what you meant, and anyone who pointed out what I did in a serious manner is really just nitpicking. Though, I'd say it's pretty commendable that you explained your point further anyway.

P.S. Yes, I do recognize the word smiley from years past. :D

No biggie!

I like your definition too, and in my opinion, any meaningful addition to the discussion is worthwhile. What I like about forums is the mish-mash of all sorts of different viewpoints that spark discussions which give people enjoyment and allow them to learn stuff. (At least when they don't turn into flame wars.)
