Impressed with the growth of our folding team

So, I have been folding for LTT for awhile, I went about 3 months day and night I think, then stopped when one of my GPU fans began failing and I had to RMA it, and since then I have been pretty hit and miss. Back in February I was the 40th team member to reach 15 million points, now I am about to be 59th to reach 17 million. I am impressed by how many people we have that are in this range since it takes a lot of time and patience to get there (or just 4 titan x? haha).

Keep up the good work!

I would fold, but my PC is in my room and I don't have my new radiator yet so it gets kinda loud under load :(

I would fold but I can't pay for the power bill. One night I let it run on my surface pro 2 lol.

Haha, yeah the pros of being in college housing where the power bill is a flat rate built into your housing cost. And regarding sleeping I have found that in my situation, if I manually set the fan speed to 40-50% I can still get not awful temperatures on my gpu (due to my clearance I normally get 70%+ on the fans). Also probably will help the fans not wear out so fast.

If I had a flat rate I would probably have an air conditioner running 24/7 to cool a mining rig running 24/7 to make a little money 24/7 :)

Eh I don't think mining is worth it anymore though... The wear and tear on the hardware isn't worth the money you get these days IMO. But meaningless internet points will get me interested! haha

true but there are a few currencies that will make a little money, especially if you use an asic

I wish i could continue folding, but my parents blocked my internet for most of the day, so I can only fold when I'm on the computer. Yes I know how to get around it, it's pretty easy actually, but I don't want to piss them off.

I fold when I'm doing homework at night. So I get 3-4 hours in. Although I've been having problems with my gpu's fans not kicking in until 95 degrees. So I hopefully it's just a software issue and I can get back to folding

95 watts is what it says but HWMonitor only says 60-65 watts. Also they are great at folding, the "6" cores helps with larger folds.

would it perform better then  a cheap gpu ? cause i have an old peentium 4 that i can get an old lga 775 mobo and a cheap psu and get a cheaper gpu to set up for folding, either way i already have the pentium ram and a network card, all i need is a cheap lga 775 mobo and a cheap psu and also a gpu and a can have a dedicated folding rig, or i can go get a fx 6300 for hopefully decent price get a mobo psu some ddr3. aand after looking somebody is selling a fx 8120 for 100$ cad in my area, but tbh i dont kinow if i should be blowing a couple hundred on a folding rig right now or not :/

Well if you have a microcenter near you, you can pick up an FX 6300 and a decent mobo under a combo for under $100, also I have a GTX 650 ti which is slow as can be when it comes to folding so I would recommend not getting anything lower than that even. But ya also RAM is dirt cheep at microcenter so you could get RAM, mobo, and cpu for under $160 right now.

If you don't have a microcenter I would say pick up a core 2 quad and cheep dell 775 mobo. (assuming your motherboard is an older LGA 775 motherboard).

ya im in canada so prices are stupid high, like the 980ti is 650 in the us its almost 900$ here depending on the model, and i dont have a mobo atm for the pentium, i slavaged my dads old pc and took everything but the mobo, case and psu

Ah alright, ya if you can find out if your motherboard supports the core 2 quad that would be your best bet, then get a gpu depending on the amount of money you have left over. Also look on craigslist and see if you can find some cheep lga 775 system or AM3 system and throw a Phenom in there. Let me know what the parts of this system you got is first then I can let you know from there I guess :D

what do you mean what parts do i have ? for the folding system or my main rig ? my main rig that i currently fold on is in my signature but the dedicated one so far i only have a cpu, ram, hdd. i NEED a mobo, psu, and gpu, if i had the money theres a r9 295 x2 for 750$ used which is a steal but almost the cost of my entire main rig and id probably be too tempted to just use it for gaming :P

Specs of the system that your dad gave you (the lga 775 system)

pentium 4 2.8ghz dual core, 1gb ddr2 (2x526) 200gb hdd, i.d.e dvd drive, two network cards, a crappy 200w psu. but out of that i only kept the cpu, ram, hdd, dvd drive, and the network cards. i didnt keep the case cause it was dented and busted up, the mobo was a pretty crappy dell oem model from 2004 ish so i didnt keep it, and the psu, well i didnt really feel like having a fire in my house so i threw that away. my intentions were to sell the parts but their not really seeling so im trying to get some use out of them

it was a prety low end internet browsing pc from 2004 ish time, had some good time playing halo combat evolved on it though :P

Ya if you kept the Ram and the hard drive you could just find a cheep mobo and core 2 quad on ebay/Craigslist and cheep case for under $100 and have yourself a decent system for pretty much anything basic such as folding. DDR2 is dirt cheap also. I say give it a try and if you don't use it you can always sell the system. :D
