Do many people actually think this about Techies? or could this just be a localized issue? How can someone who knows his way around computers have such a negative view of techies? I just can't understand his thinking here...

Well... to make it worse some kid was bragging how he hacked a bank and when I asked how he said it was simple and just got the IP address and asked the Bank Manager what the password was. I was like oh, k then

Many people fear what they do not know, and they are also the ones that are fast to condemn someone who knows and understand what they do not know so they feel better about their chosen ignorance and unwillingness to learn. A few older (senior) relatives of mine sometimes say stuff like "hey you're a hacker, can you help me with my computer?"  I don't think they really understand the severity of calling someone a hacker, especially in public, or telling other people in passing conversation. It's not them I worry about, its the ignorant and fearful types that hear "that guy's a computer hacker" and think it means that someone does nefarious things with computers in their spare time. :rolleyes:

 

cracker is the more correct term though for people who break into computers, kinda like a safe cracker in a bank robbery.
