Alright, LTT Forum members! Let's see what's what with you guys.

Your opinion will be shared publicly. Choose wisely.

Hint: It's pretty obvious.

Hint: It's a gaming type build.

EDIT: This is not a personal build! This is just an opinion. I won't actually be using any of these in any build.

Sorry, the poll was having issues before you posted that. You have three low-end choices.

Would be helpful if the poll is actually included into the post... ;)

It's there for me.

OK... Who's the funny guy who voted for the i3?

860K is better than pentium. Pentium has better upgrade path.

Agreed. I went with the 860K because it's the second cheapest and the highest performing by a large margin despite the very limited upgrade paths.

The FX6300 isn't that much further out the price bracket.

that and the pentium trade blows really.  you could pair either one with a 760 or 270x and probably not see any difference in performance.  I'd get whichever is cheaper

the only glaring negative about the pentium is that its a dual core.. a lot of games nowadays aren't friendly with dual cores i.e. far cry 4

motherboard and cooler needed for 6300 bring it closer to i3 and that smashes it again so no.

860K, maybe FX 6300 (but for the same price of a FX 6300+mobo you can get an i3 4160+mobo)

If you want to upgrade real soon, get the Pentium.

can you really expect those new apu's to even touch intel i5's?

Why is it that whenever someone says they are making a gaming pc on a tight budget like 350-450$. Some people say get a G2358 or i3 and deal with dual core frame stuttering, then upgrade to a i5 latter. If the guy can only afford 350$ for a whole build, do you think he will always be able to afford an i5 later on down the road, that costs more than half of his original budget was. Let alone the people who say get a Z97 motherboard if they are doing a 450$ build, so they can upgrade to a k series cpu later, the 4690K is 220$ how do you think they can afford that. And even if they do upgrade the cpu later they have a i5 running a 750ti or 260X so then they should upgrade their gpu as well. I see it as a slap in the face like saying to someone "yea you're poor so get this piece of shit until you can afford a cpu that belongs in 600-1000$ builds".

These are the only AMD CPU's worth buying. Notice how they are designed with energy efficiency in mind and are true tri,/quad cores. The Hex core gets the turbo core feature, which actually helps a lot more in low thread tasks than Intel's turbo boost: http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/processors/desktop/phenom-ii#

i voted for the athlon 860K for when you can't afford a proper CPU at least this one is cheap.

G3258 is a better option if you plan on getting a proper CPU anytime soon...but like...can't right now for reasons.

860K is better than pentium. Pentium has better upgrade path.

That about sums it up. If you're never upgrading this system, the 860K is a solid choice. Faster single-threaded performance than the 8350, overclockable, and on a more modern platform (e.g. with PCI-E gen 3). There is no upgrade path though, it will bottleneck higher end cards, and even overclocked it has lower single-threaded performance than a modern Intel CPU.

The G3258 lacks all kinds of features (AES, hyper-threading, etc.) but it does have two strong cores that can be overclocked significantly. Those two cores will give the 860K a run for its money. Also, by using the 1150 socket, you have a great upgrade path to an i3, i5, or i7 down the line.

As the owner of a Phenom II myself, I'd go with the 860K or 8350 if I had to choose between AMD processors. Either will give you a higher ceiling in single-threaded performance, which is what matters for games. Clock per clock the Phenoms and FX lines are about the same, with the difference being you can overclock the FX chips up to 5GHz, whereas most Phenoms top out at 4GHz.

No, they won't. Especially the FX 8350-since its a quad core with its integer units split in 2. And clock for clock Phenom II's are a lot faster. (And we are past the days of clock speed being everything, my i5 4440 is faster single threaded for example than an FX 8320 or FX 8350 above 5.3GHz. And at 4GHz my Xeon X5450 is faster single threaded than an FX 8350, and its an even older 45nm processor).

Exactly! If someone is on a shoestring budget, they need the best they can get at the time of purchase. "Go for the Pentium G! You upgrade it to a 4690K in a few months once you've saved up..." While I'm not on a shoestring build budget, I don't see any point in "future proofing" a build unless it's at a reasonably high tier. If someone asks for a decent PC for under $600 USD, they want something good then, not a year from then when they can finally afford that top tier i5...

No, they won't. Especially the FX 8350-since its a quad core with its integer units split in 2. And clock for clock Phenom II's are a lot faster. Who the heck wants a Xeon in a build they want to use an 860K in? Do you think sub $100 CPU buyers can afford Xeons and i5s?
