Starbreeze Studios is making a VR headset with resolution of 5210x1440

The studio behind Payday has decided to join the VR world with it's StarVR. It's gonna be shown on E3 with more info probably announced there. They say gamers are gonna lose their minds and that they are gonna present the true VR experience. We'll have to wait and see. The Walking Dead demo is coming.

The new VR headset will be shown off at E3 this week, alongside Overkill Software's upcoming shooter based on The Walking Dead. Starbreeze has acquired French VR hardware developer InfinitEye, with InfinitEye turning into Starbreeze Paris. Moving onto StarVR itself, which is sporting a huge 210-degree horizontal field of view, with a resolution of 5120x1440, courtesy of its dual 5.5-inch panels.

2 x 5.5'' screens? Not to mention AAA games, I would like to see this in Payday 2.

Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint said: "The landscape of entertainment is rapidly transforming. Experiences are moving from linear to user-determined, pushing storytelling to responsive and inclusive formats. The virtual reality setting allows us to completely immerse our players in our games. Starbreeze is on the frontier of VR development and we see it as a new platform ready for AAA experiences in games such as Overkill's The Walking Dead".

He added: "Virtual Reality is here to stay and will skyrocket the world of entertainment to a completely new level. At Starbreeze, we are set to be one of the frontrunners of this ground breaking development, bringing the next generation entertainment experiences to reality".

From them it looks very promising, which is to be expected, but tbh I really want to see how it turns out. I am looking for a good VR headset, and if it turns out to be good, well who knows.

just like phones and pc hardware? They just need to collaborate a bit to make it a standardized communication method

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

apples to oranges. If game devs have shown anything, its apprehension to utilize specialty peripherals when there is no competition on the type of peripherals or under utilize them. I have no doubt unless VR setups become as unified in how they behave and work as your run of the mill monitor we are going to have a situation where game X will work on VR headset A, but not B or C . or A and C but not B etc.

agreed, I want one of these badly since I play alot of "cockpit based" games...things that would work great for these...but with the Rift and Vive it turned my enthusiasm into extreme apprehension, hell I was saying when the rift was the only one on the horizon I would be getting it ASAP once I demoed it, but now..that wont be happening since the vive seems to have some major positives going for it. And the fact its Valve makes me think it wont do shabby, but the coding genus of John Carmack on the rift side can't be neglected either.I dunno I forsee myself sitting out on VR for a while now though when I was going to try and get one asap before.

They need some sort of standard API for games that VR makers and Game devs all use so that you can chose the hardware you want without game devs having to code for five different VR headsets otherwise it is going to be a mess

Interesting, to say at least.

But yeah, as more and more VR headsets are being developed, it would be great if there was some standard that everybody followed, or else it will become a massive money sink for consumers.

And btw, for those curious, background song in the beginning is this.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Oculus already committed suicide by banning VR porn and saying they wouldn't support it.

Fragmentation of the VR market is going to kill it before it has a chance to become anything.

Valve is attempting to avoid that with an API called openVR. And they have got Oculus on board as well.

-The important part of OpenVR is that it has no gate keepers. No one will tell you what you can and can't make.

-OpenVR attempts to allow exiting titles to run on new hardware with no changes

-OpenVR currently supports HTC Vive developer edition, Oculus Rift DK1, and DK2

-Games that use open VR won't need to update in order to use new headsets or new vendor hardware

-OpenVR will support Windows, OSX, and Linux

-no restrictions on what apps you can build with OpenVR. You can distribute anywhere. You can sell it, give it away for free, or come up with a new model.

-If you're a hardware vendor with a new device you can write a driver without permission

Well, from the article I read, they won't allow it on their official app store. And they've actively said they don't wan't people making it for OR.

I'm assuming this means they won't distribute whatever kind of software/programming/whatever that people would need to make VR porn. I'm thinking of it sort of like an Nvidia Gameworks situation. If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me. I assume one would need something from OR to make stuff run properly on OR (source code maybe? Very early, brain doesn't want to wake up fully)

Ok. But I don't think they are going to lock down the rift to only running content from the Oculus store.

More pixels and more FOV I get it, but why they are talking about it like they reinvented the wheel? It will only work for people with 980 sli's and up and 95% of games wont support 200°+ fov, so they are targeting a very niche market, you could use it in lower resolutions and lower fov with black bards, but that why not buy a lower spec oculus then for less?

Yeah I don't think they would lock as well, since if they do modders can't mod games for vr

That's an interesting idea. Hopefully it takes off.....and who in the hell watches porn on a 3DS?

makes sense from their point of view to say they dont support it, as facebook is facebook, not pornbook.

1440P 90fps(or whatever) POV porn with oculus movement support would be fucking nuts. people would pay a lot of money lol. next gen cam girls?
