Will the Pentium G3258 @4.2 bottleneck r9 285?

possible setup:

8 gb ram

pentium g3258 oc at 4.2 GHz

Nah it shouldn't like at all. If you overclock it everything will be even finer for you. Im currently running a R9 280x and a g3258 @ 4.9GHZ lol with ZERO issues.

My 4.4 GHz G3258 had trouble going over about 40 fps in most games. It would constantly cycle between 40 fps and 100 fps, it was horrible to play like that. Your best bet is doing some kind of adaptive VSync to 30 fps and then cranking details and AA up to get your GPU to higher usage. A frame limiter is an absolute must for most games in my experience with mine.

Without knowing the application(s) the CPU and GPU will be handling you simply cannot answer any questions about potential "bottlenecks."

The big question is what GPU he is using. I consistently run all games at 60+fps with no shuddering. It could also be he needs to tone down the overclock a little bit just a bad overclocking chip. There are too many variables in it.

You seriously think that a dual core is enough for gaming (and even won't bottleneck a high-end gpu), if your goal is 25-50 fps then OK.

Same results dialing back to 4.2 GHz. I was using it with my GTX 970 for a week before upgrading the CPU.

The Core i3 are great budget gaming CPUs since you can run them on cheap boards with the stock cooler (they're only 53W chips).

A lot of games will be held back by the CPU. if you can upgrade soon it would be great. Overall depends on the game though. In games like GTA V and Witcher yes it will bottleneck

Well in many cases its possible to game with dual core. Remember this is a budget, not titan x and 5960x build

in most cases it will be fine with a 285, only games like far cry 4 and cpu intensive games will give you problems.  you could still play them but you may get huge frame dips and stuttering....but games like mortal kombat x? no problem

Thats actually spot on right. thanks. I mean of course an i5 would be better but considering that were i live the i5 4460 costs 3x the price of the pentium, its probably not worth it for a budget-entry level
