980 ti or 970 SLI

I was thinking about buying a 1440p monitor later for gaming but I don't know what kind of graphics set up I should use. I currently have an EVGA GTX 970 FTW and was thinking of either getting a second one or selling it and getting a 980 ti hybrid instead. Which option do you guys think would be cost effective and deliver the best performance for my money? If the 980 ti hybrid is the better option, how would I sell my 970? eBay is not an option for me as I do not have a reputation built up

I would just get a ACX 2.0+ GTX980ti from EVGA and sell the GTX970. The GTX980ti is perfect for 1080 and 1440 and should last many years at that resolution.

If you already have a 970 then get another one for half the cost.

 

The 980 Ti is basically the same as two 970s and costs the same as two 970s too.

 

 

I would just get a ACX 2.0+ GTX980ti from EVGA and sell the GTX970. The GTX980ti is perfect for 1080 and 1440 and should last many years at that resolution.

2 970s and one 980ti will net similar performance, and while I'm usually an advocate for better single gpu cards, after the annoyances I faced with my previous setup consisting of 2 760s, the money you will loose if you go for a 980ti will be relatively large.

 

If you did not have a gpu yet, I would have recommended the 980 ti but since you already have a 970, it will depend on weather you see the benefits of a single more powerful card being worth the extra you have to pay...

I agree. If you didn't have any GPU and you were getting one or other of these, then the 980 Ti would make sense, but if you already have a 970 then I don't see the sense in spending £550 on essentially another 970.
 
Either way you'll be good for 4K let alone 1440p.

Yeah I know. The reason I say it is perfect is you can get solid FPS well over 100 on every game maxed out so you can get a 144hz monitor and keep playing until 4K is cheaper and single cards can run 60FPS.

Even with DX12 coming and stackable memory, it's up to the developer to optimize for it "which... we know isn't going to happen" so you're still stuck with 4GB of vram.

I'd get a 980ti and then add another 980ti in the future.

Yeah I know. The reason I say it is perfect is you can get solid FPS well over 100 on every game maxed out so you can get a 144hz monitor and keep playing until 4K is cheaper and single cards can run 60FPS.

 

Right now at any resolution CPU usage seems to bottleneck before reaching 144Hz. Maybe Dx12 will help high end CPUs actually be utilised here as well as low end CPUs, but that's speculation for now.

 

The 980 Ti shouldn't have much trouble getting 60fps at 4K -- 970s don't.

From most benchmarks it seems to get 60-35 FPS. But DX12 might help it get that extra bump needed
