Do I really need a PCI-E 3.0?

I´d like to buy a Geforce GTX 980 ti and run it with a AMD FX-8350 CPU, the problem is I can´t find any motherboard with AM3+ socket that has PCI-E 3.0. Could I mount my GPU on a PCI-E 2.0? Would it affect my gaming experience? I´d like to play fps games at 4k

don't buy an FX 8350 and a 980ti...  That CPU will bottleneck the crap out of your GPU in 99% of games.  PCIe 2.0 is just fine though

For know 2.0 is just fine for gaming

2.0 is fine. But pls do not get 8350 and a 980TI. you're better off with an i5 and a gtx 970.

Gen 2 still supplies enough bandwidth...more than what a graphics card can saturate.

don't buy an FX 8350 and a 980ti...  That CPU will bottleneck the crap out of your GPU in 99% of games.  PCIe 2.0 is just fine though

 

He's only going to be shooting for 60 FPS at 4K. There's a few games out there where it might bottleneck sub-60 a bit, but I don't think it's going to be a serious issue.

It's pretty rare that PCIE-2.0 gives any kind of performance hit more than maybe 2%, and usually it's a lot less than that. The other day someone posted a benchmark done with a GTX 980 and the difference was negligible in almost everything. There were a couple of exceptions, but the only serious one was Ryse Son of Rome, which actually had 10% better fps using PCIE-3.0x16 vs PCIE-2.0x16. I use a GTX 970 on a PCIE-2.0 board (Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V) and I haven't run across a game that plays much different from the benchmarks that are always done using PCIE-3.0x16.

Anyways, the concern will be minimum framerates due to the FX-8350, not PCIE bandwidth. If you can get a monster overclock to 9590 or even 9370 levels you can come reasonably close to i5 performance in a lot of games since you already have the chip, assuming you have the board, cooler, and power supply for that kind of overclock.

At 4k? Maybe not on GPU intensive games? I had 4k DSR on my 970 and 8350 and that wasn't bottleneck BUT that wasn't a 980 obviously.

i think the fx actually work better on higher resolutions. oc it to 4.7 and it should be fine. i had an fx 8320 4.7, now i have an i5 4690k at 4.7 it have better min frames, but games like bf4 the fx win. counter strike push 300 fps on i5, and 200 on the fx, because source engine works better on intel :)

i owned an FX-8320 that i had running at 4.6ghz and it was limiting the performance of my GTX 780 in MANY if not most games...and that GPU is A LOT weaker than the powerful 980ti...

For such high end graphics solutions, you do require a good intel quad-core CPU...otherwise the GPU will never be fed properly and your games will run like crap.

 

Here, GTX 970 and overclocked FX-8350 running dying light (on lowest possible settings mind you):

 

This is the framerate you get in many games...30-40FPS...you want to buy a 800$ GPU to have your games running at 40FPS? i doubt it.

 

My machine with a weaker GPU (GTX 780) running the game MAXED OUT with a better intel CPU:

 

As you can see, the difference is immense...and that doesnt mean you have to buy an i7-4790K...an i5-4460 and a cheap H97 board would run that game pretty much just as well.

Missed the part where he said ''at 4K'' in which case the FX is ok to properly feed a GTX 980ti...you will render games at around 40 to 60FPS all the times regardless and you WILL be mostly GPU bound for most titles...but OP if you don't already own the old AM3+ motherboard please do yourself a favor and don't buy that...look for a modern socket instead: core i5-4460 and H97 board if you're on a budget...i5-4690K and Z97 board if you can afford it.
