Looks like the release of the new NVIDIA SHIELD console device, first revealed back at GDC in March, is nearly here. A listing for "NVIDIA SHIELD" as well as the new "NVIDIA SHIELD Pro" showed up on Amazon.com today.

Though we don't know what the difference between the SHIELD and SHIELD Pro are officially, according to Amazon at least, the difference appears to be the internal storage. The Pro model will ship with 500GB of internal storage, the non-Pro model will only have 16GB. You'll have to get an SD Card for more storage on the base model if you plan on doing anything other than streaming games through NVIDIA GRID it seems.

 

 

No pricing is listed yet and there is no release date on the Amazon pages either, but we have always been told this was to be a May or June on-sale date. Both models of the NVIDIA SHIELD will include an HDMI cable, a micro-USB cable and a SHIELD Controller. If you want the remote or stand, you're going to have to pay out a bit more.

For those of you that missed out on the original SHIELD announcement from March, here is a quick table detailing the specs, as we knew them at that time. NVIDIA's own Tegra X1 SoC featuring 256 Maxwell GPU cores powers this device using the Android TV operating system, promising 4K video playback, the best performing Android gaming experience and NVIDIA GRID streaming games.

Loos like we're close to this device going on sale then! It is interesting that Nvidia has made 2 different models of this (they only announced one) but at least the only difference is storage, rather than any other specs. Assuming that the Pro has a 2.5in drive for storage (given the 500GB) it would be interesting to see if you can swap that out for a larger drive, so it could be used as a basic HTPC replacement in terms of being able to store your media files.

No dude like you should totally buy one, if you don't you will miss on a lot and you won't be using an X1 chip, also it has a low power consumption and its Android TV so it's a great media box, you can also use the Nvidia stream thing to play games with low latency from your couch.

Afaik, that is the only way this thing copies the OUYA. It has hardware that actually isn't shit, a huge company that is backing it up, a large library of games, and a unique feature in being able to stream PC games at 1080p @60 fps from both your own PC and Nvidia's own servers. I'm pretty sure this thing tramples all over the OUYA.

I think it is hilarious it can beat other consoles... I can see this useful for my brother since he has a TV in his room, but his rig is in the living room.

Dpending on the price and your current pc hardware, for those who are just beginning to dab into gaming scene and don't have the necessary pc power, I still think a console like xbone and ps4 is a more enticing product to get.

I think I would get more use out of this than my Shield portable. I might buy this since I could easily use it for my Plex server and stream games when I want to be outside in the garage instead of being cooped up in my room all day. Wish this also had Display Port on it as well but I will still buy the Pro anyways.

I don't understand the Shield naming. So it's a tablet, a controller with a screen, a set top box, and idk what else cause its so confusing

If i can buy a shield console and plug an xbox controller into it then stream gameplay from my desktop to the TV i will get one for sure but i have no interest in this cloud computing nonsense, at least not for gaming anyway, especially living in a place like Australia.

I can't get the Roku 3 in Denmark which was annoying for a while. But after nvidia showed this i didn't care about Roku 3. This will the centerpiece of my upcoming media center setup. I will finally be able to stop using Sony interface (awesome tv, sadly their platform isn't great, though now that i think about it, which tv actually have a good platform)

i know nvidia ported some games like trine and portal but i dont think they got crysis on it yet and if they do i dont expect the frame rates to be good probably 30fps 720p
