Dota 2 TI5: Prize Pool Swells to Second Highest Ever in 24hrs

It's been only shortly over 24 hours since the compendium release for the Dota 2 International Tournament 5 was opened for purchase; And in that time it has swelled up faster than nearly any other esports tournament in history.

 

As of 11:35pm PST The prize pool bloated to a massive $3,608,695.00 Crushing the former second place holder "Dota 2 Asian Championships" who ended with a prize pool of $3,057,521.00. As well as pushing the formly third place holder "Dota 2 International Tournament 3" who had a prize pool of $2,874,407.00 to a now fourth place, and pushing the formerly fourth place holder, "Smite World Championship 2015" to now fifth place. 

 

It is quickly beating up to the current first place, "Dota 2 International Tournament 4" who still reigns with a prize pool of $10,931,103.00. This is by far and wide one of the fastest growing eSports prize pools' in history, surpassing even the current first place holder of TI4 in terms of growth speed.

Cannot agree more. It's one of the most exhilarating displays of concentration and skill in gaming you'll ever see. The people that play in these things are beyond human in their reaction speeds and understanding of the game.

But it's not watchable. I was Diamond in LoL and I am LEM in CS:GO so I am fairly good at games and grasping their concepts. But all I see when I watch dota is a hot mess of oneshots and 10 minute stuns and casters shouting over things I can't understand. Man I don't play SC2 and even that is more enjoyable to spectate.

It took 5 days to reach the current prize for TI4, that's about 2-2.5 times slower growth.

Whenever I watch Dota I see a flurry of neon lights and I hear a bunch of random gibberish. The learning curve for watching is nearly as high as playing.

yeah PC is better than consoles, but it just seems so immature to just rub it in, yeah it would be fine giving argues saying that PCs are better than consoles like 4-5 years ago where PC was the underdog and consoles were dominant, but now theres just no point, consoles ARE good if youre a casual gamer and you also play with your family, honestly the people that say "pcmasterrace"  are just new to pc gaming and are just so proud of themselves, also arrogant.

Nothing was "rubbed in".  You are possibly including other instances of PC Master Race related comments.  My comment stated that a tournament with a prize pool this large is only possible on PC due to the superior conditions to allow a prize pool to grow to such a size.  One could make the argument that a tournament with this prize pool is technically possible for console games, but until that happens, I will believe it is not possible.

 

There are many factors involved.  I believe on major factor is that PC gaming tends to lead to more "visible" communities.  I say that because it is more common and easier for Twitch.tv-based communities to grow with PC games.  Indeed there are popular console-based game streams, but there are just simply more and larger ones when it involves PC gaming.  This could be related to the tech-saviness of the community members in that they are more likely to setup a game stream with a proper webcam overlay instead of just jamming on the Share button to begin a Twitch.tv console stream with no commentary.

 

As such, a strong community will lead to tournaments which are more popular and result in larger prize pools.  The proof of this theory is the size of The International prize pools.

 

I believe I've stated sound points and brought facts to this side-discussion.  This means that I am providing points and the intent is not to be "arrogant" or "rub it in" as you've claimed.

It has almost nothing to do with community showing its love or support for the game. It has more to do with the status symbol being offered.

 

Think it this way, at TI3 the crowdfunding model was already in use. However, only at TI4 the prize pool completely exploded. This is because this time around, they introduced a "leveling compendium" which has effectively no cap on how much you can spend on it. Dota 2 did not explode in popularity between those two events - at least not enough to explain the difference between TI3 / TI4 prize pool.

 

I would wager that majority of the money is coming from people who are spending hundreds if not thousands to level up their compendiums.

 

If anything, the whole "community feeling" has gone down with the transition from WC3 Dota to Dota 2. Valve has done a good job on restricting smaller communities from spawning up on the platform (WC3 had custom leagues, every other Valve game has custom servers, in Dota 2 the custom server support kinda sucks and the only ones able to keep on going are the ones which can afford constant maintenance) and diverting all the attention towards the monetized professional scene.

 

The community rewarding Valve for good work is exactly the narrative they want.
