Make sure that your system clock is set correctly. It that is correct, make sure you're not trying to connect via a proxy or VPN, because that can cause certificate errors, then click the padlock in the address bar (it's probably crossed out due to the error) and switch to the connection tab. Click "Certificate information" and post a screenshot of the "general" tab of the window that opens. It should look something like

System clock is correct and there is no proxy/VPN for me, it just seems to happen out of the blue and eventually goes away for a while before occurring again. Any ideas?

Can you post a screenshot of the certificate info? The error implies that the certificate has expired, which isn't possible because it's valid until July, so there's either something wrong with your chrome installation or the certificate is somehow incorrect.

I think it's probably happening with all HTTPS encrypted sites for him.

Could be Google related, my Firefox just warned me about an untrusted connection to the Gmail account I need to use for work.  Home PC on my own network and 100% virus and malware free.  Perhaps the Big G were so busy stealing everyone's data that they let their certificates lapse?

EDIT : And now it works again.
