At a lost , need advises in life.

jollyup

Hello. First and foremost , I am opening this thread to get advises on my current life. I've finished high school for about 1 year and ongoing but I do not have any aims , what to do and what I am interested in , thus decided to get advises here. There aren't much courses that I can be enrolled in since my high school results weren't top notch. But I believe there are still a few that I could be in.

Anyway , the past few months/year I've been thinking to myself , what can I do , what I am interested in? I am always very interested in gaming and maybe that's why I somehow became an "introvert"? Social fear (doesn't seem to be a case when I'm online chatting with someone I know) and so on. I have quite an interest in being a programmer (maybe because I'm always infront of the PC , so that sorta how the thought came from) but never have code before and that I know the "IT" field does require great Mathematics , which I am not very good in. I always thought to myself that , and that sort of made me give up everytime, thus being lost. Also thought of learning it myself , since most college doesn't accept my current results. IF this were possible , I've heard that if you are in the IT field and you do not have the skills to create something groundbreaking , be prepared to just become an "IT support" with a lowly paid salary.. I've also been wondering why do people in the IT industry not just do an app and be done with it? Like Angry birds and so on which became very famous and successful.

That aside , over the years I've also found out that I have low self esteem , which is terrible to dealt with. Even now I do not have a driving license because maybe of the fear or driving? When I was young , I was particularly shy , most people including myself thought it was fine . I still remember that I hate being in the center of attention , I get so nervous/fear. Maybe that led to one and then another , somehow became what I am currently facing with? I also think that all of this issues came up was the lack of confidence. Fml , I almost teared writing that.

Yes , I've been playing games everyday and being lost at the same time because I do not know what to do. It's not that I do not want to learn. I am posting this because I do not want this to carry on further and then continue with life. Hurts to see my parents still working at this age.

Question is , what can a person like me without good results do? Also an advice for people IF there are , facing this , please do go out and interact more before the issues like what I have comes up.

I'll appreciate anyone giving advices and also thanks if you read all the way the wall of text. Sorry if I posted at the wrong section.

Shit , even now I am debating whether to post this or not , social fear acting up i guess.

Creating apps is like creating music. A lot of people can be good at it. Not many go big. I'm turning 19 in six months, and I still only have a G1 (equivalent to a learner's permit). There's no hurry. My dad keeps on pushing me to get it but I'm just too lazy. The majority of my friends don't even have one, even the ones that are in University right now.

I got a job in retail because my aim in life is to do nothing. I was in the same sort of situation as you are, I still dont know what I want to do in life so I plan to carry on saving money and working. I suggest if you cant think of something you want to do with your life right now, find something that can occupy you that is somewhat interesting.

I work in retail at a telco. I meet a lot of different interesting people and get to work with technology. I hope that ill get an idea from my customers that pushes me down the path I want to go, otherwise im quite happy to keep doing what im doing.

Long story short, just be happy.

Come work for my father. He will put you on a jackhammer and make sure you will want to get back into school and Pursue a college education. Since you don't know, you can go to community college and get your basic courses out of the way and maybe you'll know what you want to do afterwards. And sometimes you just have to pick a direct and start walking to see where the path ends. Sometimes good. Sometimes not so good. But the journey to there is what's makes you better than the old you. I'd love to drop out of college and just go to work in the field for the rest of my life but I know that will not support my future family and my parents would be very disappointed in my decision. So every day I wake up and work hard and doing the best of my ability to complete each class so I can get that degree. You need to live your life such that you can provide for you kids a better life than the one you had. With that mind set you will strive for success and strive to move up the corporate ladder. Life is hard and it sucks but you live for the moments.

True about the music part. But that's not the point here , I don't know where to start :(

And I have no idea what's G1 too , not local. Thanks for the advise though!

Honestly , I would definitely love to meet new and awesome people. But sometimes , social fear acts up and then I don't interact much , so people don't really take me seriously. I am sure that the issues came up because I was in a school that mostly speaks another language , which I am not proficient in , so I don't talk a lot and that sorta builds up overtime for years I guess. Worst part is , school was the only place where I have a chance to socialize. I really really hope that I could recover from all of these issues , it's bringing me down :(

Thanks for the advise , but whenever I think of college , I'm afraid I don't do well , well enough to be spending money on. Also that , whenever i think of college , I think of presentation , as I've mention from the above posts I do have social fear , the fear of being in the center of attention , which is really really hard to deal with , unless I am really perfectly comfortable with the situation  which I don't hardly experience in my whole high school life , I always lay low (just be quiet enough so that people don't talk to you and won't be in the center of attention sorta thing). That aside , I do not know where to start finding what I have passion of. The only thing I know that I am really really good and interested in is Gaming , which of course doesn't feed you and the family.

Thanks for the advice , but that isn't relevant from where I am currently located.

Sorry, how rude of me to skim through your post :). And yes to be frank, I've had and still have the exact same feelings (all of them) as what you have right now. A few weeks back, I posted a topic asking for help in my future plans as well (kinda different, but along the same lines). I sort of panicked because I knew my marks weren't high enough to get me into University and my parents expected me to go this coming Fall (currently taking summer school right now.). From reading your post, you mentioned gaming quite a few times. Why not work towards being part of a game development company? Not all of it is math; infact it's just a small portion of it. A couple months back I stumbled on a Youtube channel called ExtraCreditz (https://www.youtube.com/user/ExtraCreditz). It's the best thing I've stumbled upon in a long time and talks about what game devs do. You could be part of the game design team, designing maps, storyarc, etc.

As for meeting new people, I feel that it's hard to meet people that don't share the same interest as me (unlucky for me). I rarely actually go up to people and start a conversation. I overhear (yes, lurk :P) it and see if it's what I can talk about. Once we both have the same interest, BAM, it just snowballs and we talk on and on. It's because of this that I really have a small group of friends. I can't small talk at all.

Honestly , I would definitely love to meet new and awesome people. But sometimes , social fear acts up and then I don't interact much , so people don't really take me seriously.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm pretty much a nobody in my summer school class. Sure I talk to some people, but when I look around the class, it seems like everyone knows everyone, even though they're all from different schools.

Oh and a G1 (learner's permit) is just a license given to you that says you passed the theory part of driving (signs, road laws, etc). You need a person with a higher level beside you in order for you to be behind the wheel.

I have no self esteem, I think everything I do is bad and nobody will like it. I wouldn't have had the courage to write what you did here, but when I was your age I felt the same way and I graduated from high school back in 1998. I am still the same, not that you want to hear that I'm sure.

All I know is nothing is easy. Every day I go to work I hate the idea of going and being around people who are going to judge me so I work hard and hope people can't tell I'm faking how I act. If you've ever watched Dexter I am kind of like him, I try to pretend to fit in with the normal people. Not that it is good advice, but sometimes pretending to not be scared is the only way. If you are lucky you may find that you aren't pretending anymore.

You will need to be the one who determines what you want to do though, and you will likely have to accept the fact that making money playing video games is very rare. Either you should see if there is something similar or related to games you can do, or something that isn't even really similar but you like. I used to only like video games but that turned into computers for me, which is what I've been lucky enough to be doing for the past 13 years.

I really like the last line you wrote, I post stuff or start posting stuff all the time and delete it or cancel it. A lot of people get more confident online, but some people get even more shy.

Honestly, I was very shy and self conscious, and now I still kind of am. I decide to just get out there and try new things. The world was not as scary as i thought it was.

Driving is scary to many other people as well. My friends have gone through the same but after a few hours behind the wheel(not at once), they got comfortable with it.

As for not having a direction in life, try new things and try new hobbies. Perhaps you'll find something you like.

Instead of staying at home and playing videogames, go outside for a run. Exercise releases endorphins which make you feel good. Being physically fit also helps with selfconsciousness.

Also, in the end, who cares what people think about you? As long as you have good friends who accept you, you're fine. There will always be people who dislike you, no matter who you are.

Go ahead and post things and say things, if people don't like it they'll ignore it. If they like it, they'll like it and like you better. Just don't be an asshole and word things like a jerk and you'll be good. :)

Good luck with the future. No one can really help you but yourself!
