I'm in the United States. I went to the ER last year for medical reasons of course(personal). Are doctors like contractors because I got billed by them as well? The hospital billed me $2479 for being in the ER for 30 minutes. Keep in mind 15 minutes was waiting for someone while I was in pain. They gave me one thing to help me out. I saw two doctors. One checked my heart rate and asked how I was doing. Like a minute conversation. I saw another one and asked me if I was okay. So 30 seconds. I got released. Got two sepearate bills from both doctors. One was for $260 and the other was $210. I chose the wrong profession. I want to be a doctor. They did nothing for me. The nurse is the one who helped me. Also got billed from the county ambulance service as well. It was $850 for a 10 minute ride. On that bill it said Mileage and said $200. $200 for 10 miles for lol. Oh well they gave me an IV. I thought my taxes paid for the ambulance. I paid all the bills but damn overpriced much. Insurance did not cover the hospital for whatever reason. So last years bills were $4879 and the year before was $4921. Insurance covered around 90%. That $9800 was out of pocket. Surgery coming up on Friday. Just saw the Doctor charged me $300 for his 5 minute check-up before the surgery. Thankfully my dad is paying for the medical bills this time.

I would probably be under a mix of crying and anger if I had to pay that much.

I avoided paying them for a long time.

Why was it so expensive? Usually insurance covers the majority of the cost...that's weird. Sorry you have to pay so much.

I called my insurance company. They told me it was a deal they made with said hospital. Insurance paid them $67. I called the hospital and they said the same thing.

I used to think the bills were justified because they went so far into debt paying for their schooling but bills like that just seem absolutely extortionate. I'm not sure what the economy behind it is like but that just seems crazy.

Does no one regulate it? Honestly I thought the doctor got paid by the hospital but now I get seperate bills from them. Lets just if they saw a person 5 minutes and waited 5 minutes and charged each person $200 that is $1200 an hour. I want that job lol.

@techswede Your right. I always wondered why people did that. Go out of country for a medical surgery etc. It all makes sense now.

There are a lot of cases of illegal immigrants getting full care as well. So citizenship might not be mandatory

They had no reason. They just said we already made a deal with the hospital. My claim was denied by the insurance. They cover 90% for the whole year so we could look at it this way. I had $48790 in medical bills last year and I paid $4879 out of pocket.

Choked on my coffee when i saw that. How do they justify that astronomical cost? For that price i would expect to get treated like a king.

That is normal. This is why you should not go to the er unless you are 95% dead. In Houston we have redi clinics which are significantly cheaper and are good for things like the flu. It's not that the doc gets all that money, part of it goes into the insurance for malpractice and accidents. You have an allergic reaction to a drug can be considered malpractice these days and the lawsuits that follow are unreal.
