@daniellearmouth just told you, Linus made a video showing a pre-build from Best Buy was actually cheaper.

And again, Linus has proved otherwise.

It wasn't an Acer Predator; it was some Asus unit. Whoops...but regardless, he's proven that isn't necessarily the case.

Try building a computer with an i5 6400, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, A/C Wireless, USB 3.1 capability and an R9 370 for less than $900 CAD / $700 USD. It's actually pretty tough.

Here's the video I am referring to if you want that myth of prebuilts inherently being inferior in every way full-on busted.

Not allways the case, when manufacturers build "pre built" computers they buy the components in bulk quantities direct from the manufacturer. This means that they pay less for the components and sometimes this saving is passed onto the end user. It's also important to factor in the cost of a windows 10 license key, it's commonly missed out when comparing the cost of a pre built vs a custom built.

Also, they tend to use crappy PSUs. Not all the time (Dell uses good PSUs for example) but it's not uncommon. Especially from certain boutique builders like cyberpowerpc and iBuyPower.

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff. two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it, we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen, so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive. and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.

no wireless, $40 of mail-in rebates (I personally was always lucky but it's not the case for everyone) and no Windows (don't know why you put $20 for Windows 10)

Also, this was done in Canada, we unfortunately have a premium on just about anything here, you could try again using ca.pcpartpicker.com instead.

EDIT: I just transfered that part list into the Canadian partpicker ;

No USB 3.1 but other than that it's about equivalent. But seriously, it's a relatively good deal to buy prebuilt in this case. Also, it's $999 rn.

Just so long as the keys you are using were legitimately purchased from an authorized retailer ;)

Don't say that.  You might offend people on r/windows and get banned and muted.

The consensus around here is that mentioning the various sources of cheap windows keys is allowed, but only just barely.  We try to avoid promoting it...

FOr some odd reason yesterday the shooting in Florida was not anywhere to be seen on reddit's front page.  the r/news mods would delete any thread talking about it and if someone would state facts  like THE SUPSECT'S NAME mods would deleted your comments.  People would simply ask "why did you delete my comment?"  and they were promptly muted and no repsonse was given.  One mod LITERALLY told people to kill themselves ( I'll try and find the screenshots).  This massively backfired, people unsubbed to various subreddits in droves and a a subreddit DEDICATED TO DONALD TRUMP ( like a serious one) became the source of news on reddit and its still trending today.
