Yep they're still a thing - and they are ok, but I'd rather get a seperate HDD and SSD.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

They are good if you have space or SATA constraints. I don't see them being a good budget option anymore now that a 128GB SSD costs about £40, but if you only have one space for a disk and you can't afford a WD Black2, that's when they are a good choice imo

You're better off making your own caching solution since 8GBs of NAND isn't a very big cache. The only time they make sense to me is ITX builds and laptops. If you have a computer with a decent amount of drive bays then making your own will give you much better performance.

They aren't all that. I had 2 Seagate 2.5 inch sshd's in a raid 0 array once, the speeds were pretty darn good, but they both failed within a month of buying them. Maybe the tech has matured by now but who knows. I wouldn't risk it.

unless this is for a laptop that only has one 2.5" drive day, a separate HDD+SSD is better

Hey thorbrantly101,

SSHDs function great if you are using just a couple of programs often or just a few files. It stores the most oftenly used files on the SSD part for much faster caching and is a great compromise between speed and storage space. I would, however, recommend using separate SSD and HDD if you have the SATA slots and space in the case because SSHDs have more points of failure and you have no control whatsoever of what goes in the SSD part.

SSHDs make sense in a laptop or a cheap build that doesn't use tons of programs (parents facebook/email machine for example), although besides that there isn't much need for them if you can afford a separate SSD and HDD and have a system that can run two drives.
