GTX 970 for sure. There's no point getting the 690 now.

Setup: i5 4670k @ 4.2 Ghz, Corsair H100i Cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB Ram @ 1600 Mhz, MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard, Corsair GS700 2013 edition PSU, MSI GTX 770 Lightning, Samsung EVO 120 SSD + 2TB&1TB Seagate Barracudas, BenQ XL2411T Monitor, Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones + AntLion ModMic 4.0

The 960 is only good in one of three situations.

1- You want a cheap card to have some OC fun with.

2- Mini ITX builds.

3- Your PSU is crap.

Otherwise I would get a 290 or a 970.

The GTX 690 has the potential to outperform the GTX 970 in some situations, but the GTX 970 consumes less power and performs better with games that need more than 2GB VRAM. Get the GTX 970.

The 970. As powerful as the 690 is, I can't imagine buying a 2GB card in 2015, even for 1080p. I play 1080p and it seems like most of my new games use between 2.2GB and 3.0GB of my 970's VRAM, and I don't usually use any MSAA.

I use AA on my 970, and VRAM usage is around 2 and 3.2 GB. The main issue with 690 is not so much its VRAM -  its the fact that its basically SLI on a single board, and for games that don't support it, or have performance scaling issues, you will effectively have one 680.

I made a graph recently based on Data from Techpowerup, showing the relative performance of flagship cards in recent years, compared to the 980.

Although the 690 is still reasonably powerful, the smaller VRam might pose problems in some newer games, and even more so in the future. Performance wise its still decent, *IF* the game supports SLI.
